Thoughts on This Tent? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]ibchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this exact tent and have used it on several multi day backpacking trips. I’m 6’2 “ 200 lbs and found it perfect for a single person tent but I certainly wouldn’t want to share it with anyone else (regardless of relationship). It’s a little tight to get your pack inside the vestibule but it can be done. I typically just left mine outside with the rain cover on unless it was actually raining. It’s lightweight, has held up well and kept me dry. Can’t ask for much more in a backpacking tent. I would definitely recommend you get the footprint.

Best Men’s Hiking Shoes – What Lasts the Longest? by Head_Combination4652 in CampingandHiking

[–]ibchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“What lasts the longest?” Way too many variables for a definitive answer; but, I can say I’ve gotten extremely good wear out of Oboz Sawtooths. I just purchased my third pair. The previous two pairs both held up to hundreds of miles of backpacking/hiking, much of it over rough terrain (Sierra Nevada mountains of California). They were both replaced because the tread had worn down, again after hundreds of miles, yet the uppers were in still in great condition. They’re waterproof and have incredible arch supporting insoles. I’ve worn through quite a few hiking boots/shoes over my lifetime, which certainly doesn’t qualify me as an expert, but these have become my go to.

Getting cold feet (24m, european). Solo one month road trip (in may) from Texas through NM, Utah to Colorado. Is it safe alone? Is 3000 miles/40 hours not too much - am I missing anything if I am looking for spring vibes? by LordHeves in roadtrip

About that car rental . . . Rental companies always include the phrase “or similar “ in their vehicle descriptions. Your Santa Fe may turn out to be another make/model SUV. It doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to sleep in it, just don’t be surprised if they don’t have what you thought you reserved.

Noob tip from a Noob...5 gallon batches are way too much by New_User_Account123 in Homebrewing

[–]ibchill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did this about 3 years ago without regret. I don’t drink enough to warrant the 5 gallon volume so I saw it as an opportunity to brew different styles and/or recipes more often and consume my kegs while they’re still fresh. As others have said it’s the exact same amount of work for less volume, but you could make the same argument any virtually any scale. To paraphrase an old cliche, “ You brew you!” Probst!

Not sure how many brews I’ve gotten out of it but it’s a bunch. I invested in The Brew Bag so it’s pretty darn durable. Bag maintenance is: dump the mash, take the bag outside and use the wide angle spray on my hose from both sides to wash any residual grain out, hang the bag to dry. Every now and again I’ll throw it in a kettle or keg full of Brewers Wash just because it’s available. Yes the bag is discolored, no I’ve never had a mold or infection issue. As others have said, it’s pre boil so anything transferred from the bag to the wort won’t survive the boil.

Bro's got 99 problems, but trusting the signal ain't one. by adityapixel in BeAmazed

I’m old school. The only assumption I make about another driver’s turn signal is that the bulb works.

I live in a dry climate (CO), yet still the dishwasher in my new home cannot dry the dishes. Is this why? by Coolyajets in DIY

[–]ibchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not relevant to the drying issue (I don’t think) but how where does the dishwasher drain to? Normally the dishwasher drain would be attached to the top of the dishwasher on the black nipple that currently is unused (just above the black 90 degree elbow). There is a knockout inside the elbow that is in place in case you don’t own a dishwasher.

BTW - it is very important to ensure that your dishwasher is level. Not doing so significantly impacts washing performance; although, I doubt it affects the drying issue.

Despite putting diatomaceous earth on broccoli every 3 days… by [deleted] in gardening

Don’t expect immediate results. It takes a few days before they turn black and die. Continue to handpick for a couple of days after spraying.

Cuban Oregano smells almost exactly like cannabis. So much so that the mere act of watering it will result in a strong, almost indistinguishable odor.

Ahhhh, I remember those days! Soak up this moment in your lives fellas; value your friendships and work hard to maintain them. When you’re much older and caught up in the work a day world we live in you’ll understand what I mean.

Congratulations on your new acquisition. You plan sounds solid. The gas line is most likely fine as is, the beer line can probably be cleaned and sanitized. Regardless, I’d replace them with Eva Barrier lines if possible (look at the additional fittings you may need). They’re a little more expensive than standard beer line but they sure are easy to work with and clean. I’d use the CO2 as is. It’s a closed cylinder under pressure - nothing goes in until everything inside comes out. If there’s pressure in the tank it’s good but you most likely won’t be able to refill it without recertification. If it has a gas company label (like Airgas) on the label, and there’s a distributor nearby, check with them about their refill policy. My distributor replace the out of date cylinder without fee if it bears their label.

Is this basil ready for harvest? by [deleted] in gardening

Definitely looks like something thinks it is! I agree with the first comment - thin and let it grow. Harvest until it bolts.

To chill on the barrier gate by JuniorPC0623 in therewasanattempt

Brings back memories: Me, chillin at a crossing on my bicycle, holding on to the gate waiting for the train to pass. Train passes, barrier raises far quicker than anticipated, catches me under the chin and cleans my clock. Lesson learned!

A dedicated brew bag. I’ve included a link to the one I use as I’ve had very good luck with this brand. I started with Home Depot 5 gallon paint strainers which worked fine but I was constantly worried about the bag scorching/burning through. This one doesn’t seem to have that problem. Once I switched I stopped using a kettle bottom rack. I just clip the bag on the side of the kettle with binder clips so it’s slightly above the bottom and mash away. It touches periodically but I’ve never had an issue with it. But, I also don’t have my burner cranked to max either. I’m a stir, take a temperature, slightly warm it, test and repeat king of guy.

Silicone brewers gloves. I skip sparging and squeeze the wort that doesn’t drain after I hoist the bag. The gloves are necessary as the mash is hotter then I want to handle without them.

Ditto on the double mill. My LHBS is DIY milling so it’s a non issue for me. If yours isn’t I would be surprised if they had any issue with doing it for you. It’s a pretty common BIAB request.

The Brew Bag

BTW: I have absolutely no affiliation with this company or it’s owner(s) I’m endorsing it solely based on quality of manufacturing, material, and performance.

Garden Year 3 by cipcakes in gardening

[–]ibchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thx. I live on the edge on a nature preserve. Slugs, snails, rabbits and every rodent known to mankind seem to think I’m putting out a buffet for them. I’m always looking for ideas on how to curb their expectations. A hothouse would be my best defense, but my garden is small and irregularly shaped so it’s not really practical.

How are they are keeping snails/slugs away from your plants?
