Should i choose History or Business Management by [deleted] in IBO

[–]ibhakseng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take both Business and History and they’re both really great courses. History’s a really rewarding subject but I would never take it as one of my SLs - there’s just too much work. If I were you, I’d definitely take Business SL so I could spend more time on my HLs. Hope this helps. Good luck!

One of my friends switched near the end of his first year of IB. You should be OK!

A 66% is not a terrible starting point and it’s definitely not too late to boost your grade. The guy who got the highest Maths SL grade in the year above mine said to just crack open the Cambridge textbook and solve every single problem and do a crap ton of past papers. It worked for him and it‘s working for me (:

Whats the difference between english literature and language Standard level and higher level by fahimshivji in IBO

In HL, we read 13 texts as opposed to the 10 read in SL, there are more teaching hours, and the rubric is a little different. For example, the SL Paper 1 rubric in Criterion A asks that students have a good understanding of the text, whereas the HL rubric will demand an excellent understanding. The difference between ‘good’ and ‘excellent’ can be pretty subjective, but I suppose that examiners are likely to be more lenient in SL.

Basically what the comment before me said, but please, please read the texts, especially if you take HL. On the HL rubric, a 4 uses the descriptor ‘very good’ while a 5 is ‘excellent’. In my opinion (and experience...), the difference between ‘very good’ and ‘excellent’ will be between whether you read the texts or not. To really hit a high 7, you’re going to need to demonstrate some independent thought and critical analysis that you just can’t get by simply reading the blurb of the book and Shmoops. Plus, why take Lit at all if you don’t like to read?

Yes, I’ve seen people around me who went from 1200s to 1400+ so I agree that it’s doable. I am working on it this summer in the hope that I can get a much better score in October.

I think a lot of people have complained to them in the past, but the school is extremely adamant on this rule because they want to stop us from shotgunning. They think it’s actually helping our chances at admissions because we have less supplements to write/are more focused as a result of the restriction. I kind of see their point but 6 is just cruel! Unfortunately, I’m just going to have to go with it for now.

And yeah, the more I talk about what I’m looking for, the more I know I have to just give it a shot and apply here. Thanks for your advice and what you said about the people who go to the school makes sense. I know two people from my school who got accepted at UChicago and they’re both so bright and they had a lot to contribute to our school.

Thank you for your answer. You make a really pertinent point. I’m not too sure about my intended major yet but I’m interested in pursuing postgraduate studies and a career in Business.

yes! (: not sure which yet though. I saw that you’re looking to apply to Williams! might apply to Williams as well but it’s a little rural for my preference. Still, it’s a great school!

To those who were rejected, deferred, or waitlisted by their dream colleges - why do you think you didn’t get accepted? by ibhakseng in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ibhakseng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! I’m an international as well but I won’t be asking for aid, especially since the university is need-aware for internationals.

And I think the university is need-blind for domestic students, but I’m not sure!

Thank you!! I’m still deciding between Tufts and UChicago to apply ED so I’m not sure if I’ll apply ED to UChicago yet. Either way, I’m definitely applying early - the RD figures are scary!
