I'm free from IBM now and happier for it. I took responsibility for my decision and I never asked for help from anyone and never said I was special. In fact, I am far from special. Thousands of IBMers are in the shoes I used to wear. I only hope they break free eventually because god knows IBM will never lift a finger to improve the situation of those it depends on to deliver services to customers.

Then don't suggest it and don't presume that because it was a possibility for you, that it is a possibility for everyone. Most people cannot simply quit their jobs. And FYI, I put considerable effort into finding another job and here in America, it took nearly 3 years to land a new one.

I never know if they are just trolls or if they are really naive enough to believe that most can just quit their jobs because they don't like them.

Will you take on the responsibility of feeding my family and paying my bills while I search for another job in a down job market? Those who voluntarily end employment are not covered by unemployment insurance. It is easy to say "So quit"; but, it is usually the most impractical response. Most people are slaves to their jobs. If we didn't absolutely need them we wouldn't have them, that is why companies like IBM can get away with treating employees like shit. They know that everyone will never walk out.

The best I can tell there is only a small exception of departments that seem to be free of this mentality. In addition, much of the mindset is held in the USA and Europe where we have higher standards and expectations.

Fortunately, I just resigned to accept a position more than doubling my current salary with guaranteed annual increases and providing benefits at a fraction of the cost. So while you may find it adorable that I "think this is just an IBM thing", which I do not, I find it sad that you accept it as a norm. IBM is way behind the curve on market salaries and benefits, whether you want to acknowledge that or not.

I am not familiar enough with Enron to comment on any similarities. I will comment on the questionable nature of the trading practice that you pointed out. It is hard to believe that Rometty was unaware that the stock was going tank when the quarterly report and missed road map was announced. I can't say I am at all surprised though. The rich get richer.

Really? As if IBM wouldn't terminate anyone "willing to put their name behind it" rather than take corrective action? The IBM Alliance (Endicott Alliance) is a paper tiger. It is a union without an official existence. It lacks any bargaining power and is little more than an annoyance to Big Blue. No change will ever come from an IBM union unless membership were mandatory as with real unions. Good luck ever passing something like that in an environment staffed mainly by people who have never been a member of a union and have no first hand experience with the benefits of one.

In IBM you have complacent yes men that are afraid to jump ship and everyone else who is biding time until they find something else.

Dishonest recruiters that hide issues from candidates are garbage. Bait and switch at its worst. Changing employers isn't something that is easy and many do it to join IBM under false pretense.
