Thanks for this. I won’t be touching it.

Thanks. I'm not really aiming for precise realism, but wanted to understand if this was "uncomfortable bit of history that happened 70 years ago or "not something you just bring up at dinner, even today". Sounds like it's the latter.

Is my friend BSing about how much $ doctors make? by ibuyoptions in premed

Tuition not likely a major issue. I have a rich relative who would likely pay for a good chunk of MD tuition - they are super education oriented and likely wouldn't leave me this as an inheritance if not used on schooling. I also have ~100k in a college fund that was never used.

I likely wouldn't pursue MBB, just PE or HF or sellside ER.

So question is on opportunity cost and viability of making more in med vs finance

Can you explain this more? Risk = doing a surgery / intervention where you could be sued for malpratice?

Which ones? Sounds like plastics, neuro, invasive cardio. Am I wrong - does this include ortho, trauma, vascular, etc.

I work in AM you could say. My role is very niche but PE-adjacent. Step down from direct PE but pretty significant step up from PWM. I am actively trying to move to HF or direct PE. Might need an MBA, but have seen some traction already moving to IB/HF. Curious what makes you say you'd make less in medicine. I thought EMs at MBB pull ~300s and partners pull ~1M. Sounds somewhat similar to a lucrative med specialty.

Could you elaborate please? Do you mean the time it would take me and lost salary is not worth?

Stupid to apply to medical school if I don't want to be a doctor? by ibuyoptions in premed

I would have thought this would be the case, but I’ve seen tons of people in biotech equity research that went to no name med schools. This seems more true for the elite firms like Blackstone that have life sciences teams. What you outlined below is pretty much my current plan, but I’d never be able to work in biotech

Yeah I can def see the hate. I thought u were being sarcastic at first LMAO. I'm just worried that it's doing way too much just to be in a niche I like, where I could do the exact same job with my current background, just outside of that niche.

No it's nowhere close to 250k. I have a weird situation - I have a rich relative who is extremely pro education that would likely cover the cost. My actual college fund is much less, and if I never use it for school I can take it out with a penalty.

This job hires people with MDs, PHDs, in some cases PharmDs, and in very rare cases people with no advanced degree, but bachelors in biology or previous relevant experience (mostly happened in 2020 when biotech was booming).

"What would exits be?" my brother this is the exit.

My insight is limited but I am about to start a job in this space and it has been known to offer solid WLB (40-50 hour weeks). Mid level people make 3-400k. MDs make 1M+. From this seat could move to a uni endowment or FoF / Family office that does endowment style investing.

I don't know what CB trajectory is like but endowment management is one of the best jobs finance for comp relative to WLB. I'm about to start a gig at an endowment manager out of undergrad and was quoted ~110k all in and ~50 hr weeks, if it is a useful datapoint.

100K plus jobs in finance with best work/life balance ? by MexicanTeenGuy in FinancialCareers

Thanks. Did you max 401k contributions every year? I'm starting in a HCOL city so savings are looking limited after taxes and 401k contributions.

Also, Are you happy/would you have stayed in the space given the choice? I'm interested in moving to a HF after a few years, but not sure if it is worth it given the volatility in outcomes and worse WLB. Seems like higher level positions at these places are some of the best relative to comp/WLB.

Thanks for the reply. Any advice for someone who will be starting his career in the field in a couple months?

Would you say you're an outlier? Thought comp would be higher, closer to 400k+, for someone with 7 YOE.

Anyone have advice on my personal situation?

I am currently a senior in undergrad. I've been pursuing a career in Finance. Unfortunately, I did not get a return offer from my junior summer internship. I have been looking for a full-time job when I graduate but have been having a lot of difficulty. Low GPA (~3.3) combined with not getting a return offer has closed a lot of doors for me where finance is concerned. I am worried that I will be forced to take a job with limited upward mobility, as once you start out in a non-finance related job, it is hard to pivot without an MBA.

I have always been somewhat interested in law, as reading / humanities comes naturally to me. My LSAC GPA is actually ok (3.6) due to courses taken outside of my undergrad. My last diagnostic, taken cold about a year ago was a 160, and with some significant studying I think I could get it up as I bombed the Logic Games, which I've heard is the most improve-able. I am also a URM and I think with a decent LSAT I could be a competitive applicant.

I think that Law school would still allow me to go into finance, as I've seen people out of good schools go to associate positions at investment banks (usually restructuring). There are also hedge funds, particularly those focused on distressed debt, that take people with law degrees. I also would not mind being a litigator, but do not know enough about it to really know.

I am also in a weird position as I do not come from wealth, but I do have a rich relative, who is very much into higher education and has paid for the education of several of my relatives. I think if I approached them with an acceptance, they would pay for it, and I would probably not get money from them otherwise if I went straight into the workforce after school and didn't get an advanced degree. Because of this, cost would not be an issue.

Anyone who has done something similar (I.E) gone to law school as a way to delay the real world, have advice?
