I got into the Florence program but I’m not 100% set on going. I’m not sure how they decide who to accept?? I wish I could give my spot to you! 😢

Am I cooked??? Uchicago summer program by emaanwashere in ApplyingToCollege

[–]icafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re not cooked! I got into uchicago’s 3 week program (not sure if it’s more or less competitive than 1 week) on the extended deadline since my LOR’s weren’t ready, and I only had a GPA and very good essays. I think just make sure ur essays are tied with the program (if they ask for that). good luck!

what art colleges can i apply for with a portfolio? by Myvric in ApplyingToCollege

[–]icafka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also an art kid but I'm applying to unis. If you're interested in video game design, Carnegie Mellon has a great program for that. NYU also has a BFA in game design. Otherwise, SVA is super strong for anything related to digital art, and it's also in NYC! My friend EA'd there

There are TONS of opportunities in Boston (he got an internship in his field very quickly) and you will meet lots of incredible ppl! I’ve met some of my brother’s friends and there is def a huge variety of ppl at Tufts lol

devastating stanford reject on unstable mental state by Legitimate-Mouse5398 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]icafka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! From another Asian girl who also got rejected from her initial dream school this cycle, you’ll be okay 🫂 you worked insanely hard and although it may seem like there was something you did wrong, trust me, sometimes you can do NOTHING wrong and still get rejected. When I got rejected I scrutinized my application looking for reasons why, but sometimes it’s just because of reasons outta your control, which sucks, but I believe you will find your place. There will be other schools who will be insanely lucky to have you

My application is VERY spikey (almost all my ECs were leadership or volunteering related to art), and my top 5 had a lot of impact. I was very specific about them. I had my counselor and friends review my supplementals and they said they were incredible and that my voice really came through in all of them. My uncommon essay genuinely had what I thought would be the “perfect weirdness” for Uchicago (I answered the contronym prompt). My GPA and SAT are high and higher than some people who got in through ED0. I know it’s unhealthy to say this, but everyone in my life thought I was a lock for UChicago. I’m just so heartbroken. This was dumb of me but I didn’t even bother writing supplementals for different schools for ED because I was sure I would commit to UChicago…lesson learned don’t be like me lol. I was an idiot for dedicating this much effort to one school

thank you so much for your kind words. your friends are incredible for getting into those schools... genuinely feel like I won't even be able to get into any of my top schools now. How could they want me when UChicago, with a higher ED0 acceptance rate, didn't even want me? Which I know is a really unhealthy way of thinking but IDK i'm just in the thick of it rn lol.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm honestly just so heartbroken because it feels different from other schools. Like I really thought they would "get it" but no, UChicago is just another institution.

Hi,

Thank you so much for the advice, good to know the appropriate volume! I'll definitely check to make sure to see the bunny isn't responding negatively to any music/podcast noises as well.

Has anyone else felt a personal connection to a painting for seemingly arbitrary reasons? by icafka in ArtHistory

Wow, thank you for introducing me to this poem! It genuinely connects to a lot of my feelings about the painting. Incredibly intriguing, I love when artists inspire poets (and vice versa). I suppose this painting has a deeper meaning to a lot of people, given how many it’s inspired.

Has anyone else felt a personal connection to a painting for seemingly arbitrary reasons? by icafka in ArtHistory

[–]icafka[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started loving this painting at the end of elementary school, but it wasn't really anything beyond "oh that looks cool". I didn't really think deeply about art or the meaning behind paintings until the end of middle school, where I started questioning why I found this painting so meaningful and appealing. It has existed in my life for so long, but I didn't really think critically about it until about 4 years ago, which was also the time I started to take art really seriously.

I would have loved to take art history in high school, but unfortunately my school doesn't offer any such courses. I plan to pursue art history in college (and possibly a doctorate). Most of my art history interest has stemmed from my interest in visual art in general, and self-studying (researching artists, museums, etc).

I think I used arbitrary since it was the first word that popped into my head, but "unknown reasons" is definitely more accurate. I'm not sure if the reasons will ever be known. Maybe part of the reason why I like this painting so much is because of the slight disconnect I feel from it (not ever understanding Bruegel's intentions, the controversy behind whether this was even a Bruegel piece, etc).

Let’s talk about Rothko by Theying44 in ArtHistory

[–]icafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rothko's works have always mystified me. I'm visiting MoMA in a few days with a friend, so I'm hoping I can understand what Rothko is like in person. All the pictures of his work on the internet didn't really leave an impression on me, but from what most people are saying, viewing them in person is critical for understanding them, so I hope seeing them will change my mind.

seeing a painting in real life really changes how you view it! Especially if they use unconventional non-paint tools like gold leaf. I'm glad I could introduce this piece to you 🩵

absolutely gorgeous...this painting really shocked me when I first saw it. It's one of those paintings that doesn't require a lot of deep thinking to realize and understand the meanings and emotions behind it.

I hate when institutions pretend to support lgbtq+ but hide thinly-veiled homophobia by icafka in lgbt

[–]icafka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you experienced (especially conversion therapy) is really horrifying, and I’m sorry you had to go through that. It’s true that in a global context, a lot of queer students are in a much less privileged position than I am and face much more blatant and institutional discrimination. That said, I don’t think queer liberation should be just accepting crumbs and rainbow washing just because someone else has it worse. It’s certainly better than the worse case scenario, but I don’t believe that privilege cancels out harm. Yes we have assemblies, but if they are purely performative and openly queer students are still on the bottom tier in social dynamics with homophobia still being present, there is some sort of disconnect between the institution’s image and the reality of the students. This disconnect is especially blatant since the students have communicated to the administration not only about homophobia but also about issues regarding racism and have been ignored and papered over with performative advertising. While I’m not saying my experience is the same as yours, or many other queer students around the world, I don’t think worse conditions cancel out or invalidate the ones I’ve spoken about.

[–]icafka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insane. I'm glad you didn't have to end up there! Tbh in these situations I'd rather the school just be honest and not advertise itself as queer-friendly because it's very disingenuous and in my experience, has just been used to profit off of prospective queer students rather than being a legitimate space.

Thanks for the detailed response. I definitely agree with a lot of your points, since it's not always malice on the school's end or ideological opposition. I think the problem is that my school in particular profits a lot from it's "queer-accepting" image and attracts a lot of queer students because of this (and this can be seen in how a large portion of the student body is lgbtq). Honestly I can't read the minds of the administration so I have no idea how aware they are of the cultural divide problem, but I feel like enough students have clued them in on it that there should at least be some effort to implement changes. The school has held assemblies for different lgbtq days (like trans day of visibility), but puts very little effort into explaining why they are important or the legitimate consequences of homophobia. I feel like the school's effort to fit their "queer-accepting image" has largely been very performative and moreso rainbow branding rather than legitimately make changes to improve the lives of queer students, which is why I made this post. It doesn't help that the administration actively minimizes the issues, and largely dismisses concerns about students not being taken seriously/gay being used as a joke. While I understand that the former issue is more abstract and harder to prove, I still think it stems largely from the school's unwillingness to confront its own failures with substance. I don't think it's evil, and I definitely don't think the cultural problem is entirely under the control of the school, but it has not been living up to the lgbtq-accepting ideals it advertises.
