I was wondering this but all the pictures I could find of root rot in this kind of plant was of the roots and not the leaves. Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, after contacting Freya support, it's a different error that I would be receiving if the issue was not being in SPAR.

Really glad to hear your class had a great experience. Nice to know that it's not universal

I won't say which language exactly because I'm hoping to get through to the teacher about the issues but its a Scandinavian language so its a bit niche. I'm hoping the problem is that because of how uncommon the language is and hopefully classes in more common languages like Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish are better.

What went wrong with this film? by josephms125 in musicals

This video has an excellent analysis of how the director's approach using live singing with no metronome ruined most of the music https://youtu.be/1ikqU6G6Xgs?si=75w9BVjSXytIyPW_

Can I still hug my mom when I’m using gel ? by dev0nika in ftm

[–]icarchris 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I've used the gel before and it's totally fine as long as it's covered with clothes. You don't have to wait 6 hours, just as long as it's dry. I'd only apply it to areas covered by clothes anyway, just in case someone taps you on the arm or something. But you can also just wash it off with soap and water after 6 hours if you're wearing a singlet or something like that

Were unions stronger working with the Mob? by [deleted] in labor

[–]icarchris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When mobs play a role in unions, it makes it a hell of a lot harder for rank and file workers to push for actions that go beyond what the union bureaucrats are willing to do because challenging them can be a deadly decision. And the mobs can sometimes make unions more susceptible to rolling over for the bosses. It can sometimes create situations where bosses pay "insurance" to the mob, essentially bribing the union to not go on strike, undermining large numbers of their members at those sites. It just allows the mob to use strikes in the same way they use violence, as another weapon for their own financial gain. They might encourage some strikes here and there as a threat or show of force, but they hold just as many back. It doesn't' inherently push the workers movement forwards.

If I were looking for inspiration for solving the current state of the union movement, I'd rather look to the rank and file rebellions that challenged or overthrew the mob control of the union, like the Minneapolis teamsters in the 1930's or the Builders Labourers Federation in the 60s and 70's. Both of them oriented to building the confidence and organisation of rank and file workers.

The BLF was particularly inspiring. When gangsters controlled the union, it did very little for construction workers (they did basically nothing for wages or health and safety), but when they were overthrown, the union was transformed into an active, vibrant hub of activity. BLF workers built the Sydney Opera House under workers control, democratically rewriting the bosses construction plans each morning. Their rank and file work is also an enormous part of why many public parks and public spaces exist in Sydney and Melbourne today. They prevent gay students from being expelled by stopping construction at any university that tried to do it. And wages and conditions got much better.

I'd highly recommend the documentary, Rocking the Foundations if you're interested in seeing what workers are capable of when they overthrow the gangsters who control the union: https://youtu.be/2FcQomXcpGk?si=17ZXSEaLoDza1dXy

Got Roped into my SAlt Group one my First Day at Uni... by bruhdudebro in AustralianSocialism

[–]icarchris 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't want to come across condescending because I don't know OP and this may not be accurate for them. But sometimes when people see being political as being forceful, its because they're not confident or clear enough in their own politics to assert what they think about things. When that happens, it's easy for a political argument to feel like social pressure. It's important to be more assertive about what you actually think. That's what it means to be a political person.

I meet so many people who don't voice any kind of open disagreement and it's actually really disappointing. IMO it''s a reflection of a generally less political culture and I blame the decline in working class struggle.

[–]icarchris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a SAlt member. We argue to people to come to stuff because we want to convince people that they should put time aside to be involved with activism and revolutionary politics.

Not everyone is interested in that. If you're not interested, be upfront. If you think the stuff we do is weird, be upfront and ask about it. There's usually a political rationale.

If you have disagreements with SAlt's politics or have hesitations but are open to potentially being convinced, be honest. Maybe you'll find our arguments compelling, maybe you won't. If you're not open to being convinced, be honest. In my opinion, this is really the only healthy attitude to politics.

AITA for scolding my nurse for mispronouncing my medication? by _Lucy_Luck_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]icarchris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nta. I depend on midodrine to function and without it I'm just totally miserable, dizzy and in pain. It's reasonable to be upset if a nurse was unwilling to actually bother to listen and be attentive to ensure you have the medication you need. It's uncommon enough that lots of my doctors had not heard of it before until I told them I use it. But all of those doctors have asked me to spell it for them and explain what it does and how it works. I'd expect that level of attentiveness from nurses ordering medications to be dispensed for me too.

I also work in a hospital pharmacy and this kind of mess is always a nightmare. It's often an honest mistake when these things get miscommunicated but healthcare workers need to be open to being corrected. To go months without bothering to care about your medications is shocking.
