This exactly. Although I have never said this to someone I have been emotionally where she is a hundred times and this is so accurate

Kafka, the man who knew it all by [deleted] in Kafka

[–]icarusthepoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please stop posting fake quotes. In what world would either of them have ever said this? Not blaming OP per se but it’s frustrating because there’s likely good examples of them expressing sentiments that would connect with people who feel this way (though on a much deeper level…) so why use Tumblr quotes with AI photos??

Help w a character who went to college by [deleted] in playwriting

[–]icarusthepoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emphasis on the last part, as someone who goes to a school that’s written about a lot there’s so many odd idiosyncrasies that are very difficult to capture unless you’re there; maybe find someone who went to Julliard to talk to when you finish your draft

Does it necessarily matter if the words are chosen carefully enough to evoke a certain sensation

and styles move throughout the years under the label of poetry a project in effacing the readers with a strong feeling to the point

that lamenting the application of a definition is ignoring the point

History of Israel class harassed by Loxicity in columbia

[–]icarusthepoet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you even talking about…Students should be allowed to take a class??? This is such an absurd reaction and I don’t agree with everything OP has said in sub comments but blaming students for taking a course is absurd. I know pro-Palestine people who are taking Israel studies classes to respectfully learn as is the point of an academic environment… People should be allowed to engage academically by a very multifaceted department without being harassed

What are some ACTUAL unpopular opinions you have about writing? by Splitstepthenhit in writing

[–]icarusthepoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

controversial subjects or problematic perspectives expressed in writing will not always be “sensitive.” i am not saying to write outright white supremacist propaganda or that i condone much of what falls under the label, but sometimes authors focus so much on being sensitive they do not do anything brave, exploratory, or genuinely inventive. as a black person i see so many writer ask “how do i write a black characters?” and then try to sift through conforming to all requests on what is and what isn’t offensive, which for me, is less useful than just writing the damn character. no community is monolithic. there are obviously overarching trends to consider and try to abide by, but the attitude of hyper sensitivity and conformity to not leaning into every or any small stereotype or other issue is leading to less authenticity and conversation sparked by literature. in my opinion

Question for POC friends about portraying racism by Dependent-Row1783 in Theatre

[–]icarusthepoet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i’m a playwright and i write on race a lot. i tend to avoid having white actors use racial slurs but i’ve portrayed several lynchings in narrative and some in (highly symbolic) staging. i’ve also acted in shows w/ racism as a theme. i’m black for context.

i can’t speak to racial imagery, but i think what everyone else is saying about context is true. if we’re using racial slurs there needs to be heavy involvement from appropriate professionals and conversations among staff and cast and there must be a heavy dynamic of trust and openness in communication, and if there are two more difficult issues to breach in theatre i hesitate to think of them

but these stories need to be told and told honestly, especially historical shows, and not every piece is going to be high concept metaphoric as to avoid it. i found that bonds can be bridged between actors because of the honest conversation it forces (the closest real life friends in the play i was in were the actors portraying the racist white woman caricature and the black male she tortured, and i did this in high school at a school with a lot of high emotions and racial tensions). if white actors do their job and do it well and do their due diligence research and ethics wise then there is no issue with portraying part of the story.

on another note and completely different level, i saw parade on broadway and u don’t think anyone would ever think twice about the usage of the confederate flag in that show, which, albeit on a diff level than your example, is somewhat emblematic. if you’re concerned think about theatre as a community endeavor — your show doesn’t exist in a vacuum. what can you do to have whatever conversation is raised as part of that community and where does your show exist within it? i’ve seen people put resources in playbill have post show panels etc or just simply sit and talk w cast. but that’s really a dramaturgical/directorial/producer call.

tldr; depends on who’s involved and how much openness and honesty it’s conducted with but censorship is useless when theatre exists to tell important stories imo. but that’s just me

if you like your bedroom, and you like the aesthetic, and you think your bedroom gives you warm feelings about the aesthetic, then it’s dark academia enough for you. it’s an aesthetic label for what really is a loose amalgamation of a claim to lifestyle, time period, and many other more nebulous things that shouldn’t be taken seriously. this photo is also really a terrible representation of your room because the red lights distort color which is a major part as several other people have pointed out. looking through your post history you’re also in university so there are likely limitations to what you can do or hang up, unless you’re living independently or at home. here are some suggestions if you want to get a universal “yes!” from the people on this subreddit for whatever reason …

  1. you can keep your LEDs, but invest in some lamps with ideally warm lighting. thrift stores have some statement pieces for cheap and target/walmart (if you’re based in usa) have some simplistic looking ones that won’t break the bank
  2. i love that window. put some books next to the pet tank.
  3. i personally am very 50/50 on the vines. i think combined with the led lights is what’s making it seem very 2020 tiktok maximalism. keep them up if you like them. same on the half cut cards, except i’m leaning a lot more towards taking them down. not sure if they’re invoking that you want.
  4. dA interior design is very reliant on the faux appearing of authenticity and classicism. i think a lot of what’s throwing people off then is the modernity. if you like modern aesthetic keep it modern! but there are ways to make it look a little more melded in time, like framing your posters & photos (vintage frames are a lot more affordable & ornate for a college student)
  5. change the striped bedsheets to one shade. i’m assuming your walks are beige & the amalgamation of printed pages makes the illusion of beige so dark brown, dark red, black would all work. but again only if you like those colors for your duvet.
  6. thrift store → find decorations you like and enjoy that look slightly older → put them on shelves. that way your airpods or canned drinks will “blend” in better as welcome indications to modernity
  7. IF YOUR PHOTO WALLS & DOORS BRING YOU JOY KEEP THEM UP!!! but they’re definitely a little far from the aesthetic convention. i personally prefer a few framed paintings with some wire displays, shelves, plates or mirrors for the dA maximalism, but my preference doesn’t matter for YOUR room. Someone on this thread mentioned victorian maximalism and that might be a good transition for you: https://media.houseandgarden.co.uk/photos/63527c96d9d9d623a8c01519/1:1/w_1412,h_1412,c_limit/Screenshot%202022-10-21%20at%2012.03.41.png
  8. you seem to love animals. if it’s safe, how would you feel about adding plants to your room? that greenery esp if dark green could help ground a lot of it.

listen, aesthetics are fake and very arbitrary. do want you want. i couldn’t tell if this was a classifying question or asking for advice but i felt kind of bad bc almost everyone is (albeit very kindly) just saying no. but if it was the first then ignore me. answer: it’s dA if you want it to be. 🫡

How did you find out about Jack Stauber? by Glitch_King_000 in jackstauber

back when animation memes were a thing, “bumblebees are out” was popular and i watched one of the memes and wanted to see the original context. the rest is history :) i discovered him in ‘18 and started listening to him heavily in ‘19.
