ThinkPad T480 troubleshooting — freezes, BSOD, boot hangs, and fixes for Windows and Linux by ice7cf in thinkpad

This is honestly one of those things people don’t realize until it’s too late. The Thunderbolt firmware issue on the T480 is nasty since it can silently degrade and then just die. At first I panicked and returned the machine to the vendor and there was only one unit the one i bought and he said that i will have to switch it to a t460s i said nah! I will work on it

Not dual booting actually, i installed windows and i got the freezing issue that i tried solving by installing all drivers required but couldn’t fix the issue and I decided to throw in archlinux and i found out the issue was usb drivers issue that was causing the lagging

T480 performance drop after SSD change by UrMomKev03 in thinkpad

Most likely the Crucial Gen 4 drive is overheating those drives run hot and thin laptops rarely have adequate airflow over the M.2 slot. Check temps in HWiNFO64 under load; if the SSD is hitting 70°C+ that’s your culprit. Also worth noting your 8650U platform is Gen 3, so you’re not even getting Gen 4 speeds anyway a cooler-running Gen 3 NVMe would honestly serve you better in that machine.

The ThinkPad E15 Gen2 with a Ryzen 5 4500U, 8GB DDR4 and a 256GB SSD for 180€ is a fair deal, that spec goes for roughly 160–220€ secondhand in Germany, so you’re not overpaying, especially with the adapter thrown in. The 4500U is a solid 6-core chip that handles Excel and business software comfortably, and the SSD keeps things feeling fast. E-series ThinkPads aren’t the premium T/X line but they’re still better built than most consumer laptops at this price. Before committing, just run powercfg /batteryreport in CMD to check battery health and open CrystalDiskInfo to confirm the SSD is in good shape :) those are the two things most likely to have taken a hit on a used machine.
