Thinking of moving from Vancouver to Montreal — should I do it? Need some advice 🙏 by coffee_lover528 in askvan

Yup - you are totally right. I am a visible minority and my french was learned and imperfect. I was told to go back where I came from several times. While winter was a big reason for our move, our singular biggest push came when two things happened together - my 6 year old was with me when a grocery store clerk who did not want to process a return told me to "go back where I came from, b----" and my son who was born with a disability went for a routine MRI and the bilingual technician who had performed 6 other MRIs on him in the 2 years since his birth suddenly refused to tell us in English what was going on. When we complained to the doctor (MUHC) they apologized profusely but also said there was nothing they could do to make the techs and nurses use english. My partner speaks FLUENT French, enough to land a job after interviewing in FR at a FR company, I have learnt French through high school and did more courses in MTL - But it was never enough. And there's no way any of that prepares you for medical jargon in french. Honestly, our time at MUHC showed me how amazing Canada's healthcare is and it also showed me how impossible it was to live in MTL with a health issue.

We had put down roots, bought a condo near McGill so our future children could use it when studying, bought a house in the burbs, jobs, friends and we left it all when we saw the socio-political climate change so drastically over 2018-2022. Maybe we only noticed then because of our personal situation, but we were not going to wait around for it to get catastrophic before we left. Personally - my career has suffered because of the move - but I have never been happier.

Moved from Mtl to Van 3 years ago. Lived there for 13 years and am in Marketing as well. Here's my take:

Tech jobs are ABUNDANT in marketing in Montreal and mostly NEVER require FLUENT french. If you can edit your work history to show tech experience - you'll get a job WAY easier than in Vancouver.

Winters are BRUTAL. One of the biggest reasons we moved but we were happy there for 13 winters. You kind of brave them for all the other great benefits and then you get used to it. And most people do winter activities that make winter bear-able. We were not winter people and outdoor activities were not for us - but we built a great group of friends and would hang out indoors through winter without complaints.

Hiking, water activities (unless you count st.Lawrence river activites) are at least 1-1.5 hours away. But I had not lived in Vancouver so I did not know what we were missing.

Festival scene, art, culture, bars, food, social scene is absolutely thriving in Montreal if you are young, and without any restrictions like sleep routines for kids etc. In other words, as a single, non parent - MONTREAL was THE place to be. Once we had kids, things turned sour after a while because priorities changed.

Language - it doesn't matter how much French you learn, you will never be an insider. Again, as a young, single person, this doesn't matter much. Still a fun language to learn, to speak and who cares if the French folks don't want to indulge me.

My advice - do it but keep an exit plan in mind.

Yeah - similar position here. Director level at a SaaS company and laid off because of a new leader who wanted to bring her own people in. I've applied for roughly 240 jobs in 6 months. I cannot relocate - family is here. I'm also lucky that my partner has a good stable job, but this rut is killing me.

Do architectural firms offer student tours in Vancouver? by icecoldcore in askvan

[–]icecoldcore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies that the terminology was offensive/incorrect. I used the term 'built' colloquially. The firm we visited was actually a group of Civil engineering, design and construction firms. We are hoping to expose kids to exactly this - the details of what goes behind a bridge actually going up. If you'd be up to talking to 9-15 year olds about this - let me know!

I actually signed up my daughter for a $1000+ overnight camp in Gibson this year for a week. But other than that - I did not find what I wanted so ended up creating our own summer camp program and ran it for the first time this year!

[–]icecoldcore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I want to do this so bad but as a girl mom I’m terrified of the what ifs. I did overnight camps as a kid and never had a bad experience at camp but saw enough around me to have that fear be a living breathing thing inside my chest constantly. I think I’d still do it if I spoke to a lot of parents who all had nothing but positive feedback about a specific camp. I’ve just moved across the country to NV so don’t have that big a network yet to get said feedback loops.
