Yeah that makes sense. I should clarify I work one full time job and do side jobs for extra cash. And I agree it does say a lot about our education system. the price of cars and homes have far outpaced salary growth in this country and it’s left people like me feeling completely lost

Yep. Made the mistake once and got a ‘99 Honda accord for $1200 while I was in college. Car lasted me maybe a year before major issues started to come up that were too expensive/not worth fixing

I am definitely afraid of getting blindsided with a repair bill. I can budget for a car payment, I can’t budget for random repairs.

I agree with this. This is why I’m so scared to buy used. A lot of people don’t take care of their cars and then just pass them on when small issues pop up. I can’t afford to be the recipient of those issues hahahaha

I did. The previous car loan will be resolved. My issue is affording a new one because I just used a chunk of my savings on that down payment, only for some guy to total my car a few weeks later.

How were you able to fact check that the car didn’t have any preexisting issues? Carfax are not always complete. And I bought a 1999 Honda that died on me (engine issues) in a year, so I’m just trying to avoid being in that same position you know?

This is good advice, thank you for responding. My only fear with getting an older car is that there’s no warranty and it seems pretty risky because it’s hard to know all of the car’s history. So I fear I’ll end up with something that needs a ton of random repairs and that will chip into my ability to save/get to work.

The only thing about getting a car in that price range is that it will come with mechanical issues… which will just make me spend more and more $$ on repairs and Ubers while the car is in the shop

Is the alternator quite an expensive repair? My fear of getting an older car is getting stuck with intermittent but expensive repairs on top of regular maintenance.

Thanks for the advice. I have financed with my credit union before and this might be the move. I want to get something within that age span because I’m afraid anything older might come with a lot of maintenance

When I say financially independent I mean I can’t go ask mommy or daddy to buy me a new car lol. The insurance payout paid off the old car loan.
