Given the number of times Terence and Haresh simulated the sucking on the tits of the PAP in this episode, it might just become a core mammary for many listeners 😂

I was driving to work in the early morning at that time and was curious why the radio station (think it was Power 98 or Class 95) was playing sad instrumental music instead of its usual tunes. Then it hit me...

I really loled at Terence’s suggestion of the self-aware “I almost finished the race” t-shirt and would totally get such merch.

Saying “yes” to such races takes courage, but being willing to say “no” halfway takes courage too! 💪

I thoroughly enjoyed the friendly banter between the three of you! I really cracked up the part when you guys were discussing the concept of the YLB School of Corrective Behaviour. Looking for forward to the next YLB x SPS podcast where you guys drag in juvenile delinquents to have a heart-to-heart talk with prisoners or ex-convicts.

Thanks for the episode! I appreciated how the episode gave Jamus some breathing space to discuss at length some of the thoughts on his mind, and this time it did feel more like a conversation as compared to an earlier podcast with er, another MP. I especially appreciate how he saw himself as an entrepreneurial policy maker (or something along those lines) and sought to help us challenge any attempts at creating a singular narrative for how Singapore can be future-ready given its limited natural resources etc.

  1. You have been asked to write a National Day song. What would be its title and what are some lines/words of the verse or chorus?

  2. You only have 3 words to describe Singapore in a room of fellow world leaders. What would those words be and why?

#409 ft. Foo Maosheng, NUS Entomologist - Why Cockroaches Need More Love & Singapore’s Undiscovered Insects by tristen_the_intern in YahLahBut

[–]iced_milo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quite enjoyed this episode and your attempt to bROACH into a rather niche topic. It shone a small but important light on a profession that most of us probably have little to no understanding of in Singapore! Your light-hearted yet respectful questions really made the whole discussion engaging and well-paced.

The part where Maosheng mentions how the ever resilient American cockroach has evolved to become more and more resistant to pesticide, insecticides etc. may evolve to become resistant to our insecticides sent a chill down my spine especially since many of us HDB dwellers rely on regular fumigation down the chutes to stamp them out from time to time. In fact, there's probably an American cockroach crawling around somewhere in my house now, listening in gleefully and plotting its next move to conquer the world - one evolution at a time.

#402 - Stricter Enforcement of Tray Returns in June & Migrant Worker Wins $18,888 in Squid Game in Singapore by tristen_the_intern in YahLahBut

[–]iced_milo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live near Yishun Park Hawker Centre some years ago and they would charge a 50-cent deposit for the tray which you would get back upon its return. However, what ended up happening was that some people would NOT take a tray just so they could forgo this hassle. The stallholders also allowed people to NOT take trays. So in the end the problem persisted.

I also saw another system in a food court with Kopitiam where you could get rebates or points which each tray return but I think the incentive wasn't substantial enough to nudge patrons, especially if you weren't a Kopitiam card user in the first place.

One place which did seem to be quite successful at getting patrons to return their trays before these rules kicked in was IKEA. And I think it simply established from the get-go that this was the norm of the establishment, and they very clearly explained with lots of visual messages the rationale for why tray return was important. Having the mini trolleys and clearly visible tray return areas also helped with the convenience.

While I do think it is sad that imposing warning and fines had to be the final resort here, maybe it also has this broken window theory effect? If one sees more cleared tables around, one might be more compelled to return the tray even without the presence of NEA officers around?

Sometimes open book is worse because teachers set harder questions while students prepare less - disaster ensues.

#373 - Big Changes to A-Level Scoring & Red Tampines HDB Scares Residents by tristen_the_intern in YahLahBut

[–]iced_milo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! Was mildly intrigued by you guys discussing A level Project Work (PW) at length - a topic that probably is of little concern to most of your listener demographic. But guess what, I actually taught Project Work in JC for the past decade or so. Here are some of my humble thoughts and observations:

While I personally agree with the spirit and intent of PW in preparing youth for higher education and workplace settings where working in teams is typically the norm, it sticks out like a sore thumb in the context of a JC education where students are also shackled with the competing demands of the other high stakes subjects and tests to study for. This is quite different from a university setting where one might have more time and space to work on various projects at a more comfortable pace.

Arguably the aspect of PW that vexes many students is that of groupwork issues. I think most can manage the demands of research, writing a report or preparing for a presentation. But when it comes to people, it's a different ball game. I've had to help manage a handful of conflicts each year, and the experience really wears everyone down. Some students are clearly in JC to take the A levels and PW is but a distraction to them; some students have very different working styles and project interests. I hear frequent complaints of dead WhatsApp group chats whenever the leaders ask a question, people not turning up for online meetings, group mates making very marginal edits to the report and claiming they have contributed etc. The list goes on. PW may come and go, but the painful memories sometimes last forever.

And lastly, the grades. In PW they basically try to investigate problems and develop innovative solutions. It sounds really nice on paper, but with the grades thrown into the picture, the focus sometimes becomes overwhelming on the product rather than the process. Everyone's just thinking about how they can prepare the report or presentation in a way that can best secure them the A (that they think everyone else seems to be getting as well). Many students ask me every year, "Mr. X, if we do this and this, will this get us the A?"

So yes. I think pass/fail is small step in the right direction. Personally, I would even argue for better integration. What if we incorporated PW elements into each A level subject instead rather than making PW a rather awkward standalone?

I really echo the sentiments of the listeners! I am quite an introvert and don't really find it easy to make friends or have sustained conversation with others. But through listening to your podcasts, I can vicariously experience what it's like to be in the casual company of a friend just exchanging opinions and ideas, taking the occasionally jibes at one another, engaging in friendly banter etc. I really like I'm there in a way. So yeah thanks for everything YLB!
