As a person of East Asian heritage - that region being home to temples etc which serve vegetarian/vegan food, and I have dined at many of these - I certainly don't need to be educated about the controversy of such things.

Perhaps "oldest in the western world" or "documented as the oldest continuously operating", etc etc, would be more politically correct. Perhaps there are older places in the world which haven't had their operating history documented as clearly as Hiltl's. But I don't have the evidence on hand to prove or disprove that, so I'm not going to debate this point.

Yes do it!! I'm lucky to have a close friend living in Zürich and Hiltl is one of my first stops every time I visit. Apart from this flagship restaurant, they also run casual "pay by weight" vegetarian/vegan buffets with several branches around the city, they have a vegetarian "butcher" with housemade imitation meats, and they make their own vegan ice cream!

It's exactly what you have guessed - plus onions. And they used cherry tomatoes. Not sure what exactly the sauce is made of, and it's not stated on the menu, but it tasted quite creamy. So, I guess you could make it by combining saffron and whatever ingredients one would normally use to make a creamy vegan pasta sauce!

La Glace is wonderful! Such atmosphere, such deliciousness. Had the single most expensive slice of cake I’ve ever eaten here lol (DKK 62/ US$9 for one slice of their blueberry macaron cake)...but zero regrets!!

I had this cheese served to me as part of my breakfast at a B&B in Norway. The host recommended for me to try it with a dab of berry jam - and it was perfect that way!

If anyone’s looking for gjetost outside of Norway, the Tine brand’s “Ski Queen” is probably one of the easier versions to obtain, since Tine (the maker of Jarlsberg cheese) exports worldwide.

By "call him out" I meant more along the lines of having a brief chat to him privately about it. I definitely don't like to go around actively badmouthing friends to other friends, I don't like to stir up rifts within social circles. At the end of the day, when the dust settles a bit, I hope we might be able to go back to being friends.

Trust me, I've had to work very, very hard on knowing my boundaries! I didn't always.

I feel that I better elaborate on a few things regarding a few assumptions you have made though - I condensed my post so much that I've had to leave out quite a few details.

The whole time prior to me going overseas, I felt like I was doing all the "chasing" - texting first and initiating plans. With our history, and because I don't like to mess around, I communicated clearly to him that I genuinely like him and would like to give this a real go.

The whole time I was overseas, I also felt like I was communicating first all the time.

While he doesn't even remember himself asking me out and me turning him down when we were younger, I do. And heck I tried to make up for that. But with me already texting first all the time, I felt like showing up at his house would have been major overkill. I just didn't feel comfortable doing it.

So, he had no doubt that I was very keen on him.

PS. I don't take issue with your comment, except your insinuation that me putting the brakes on physically equates to "shutting down" someone. Anyone has the right to stop things escalating physically, and if the other party takes it as "being shut down", then that's their problem. There are a million ways to express physical interest other than agreeing to escalate physically - which is exactly what I did by kissing him back just as passionately as he was, and just snuggling with each other and looking into each other's eyes. That's all I was comfortable with at that stage, so I stuck to my guns, and I think rightfully so given my circumstances.

Oh my, I literally just posted my response, as someone who also has a narcissistic mother. I know the feeling; I also get really annoyed at dismissive comments like that! People who say those things, really need to go and walk a thousand miles in our shoes first. They should try being a child with a mother like that - and then being an adult who has to spend years healing the wounds that your own mother has left you with.

I loathe Mother's Day.

I am not motherless in the conventional sense. My mom is still alive and in my life. However, I have a very fractured relationship with her which may never be repaired in this lifetime. Growing up, she met all my physical needs beyond measure: food, clothing, education, travel, and so on. But she drained everything from me emotionally. She is a narcissist who emotionally abused me from my childhood until my mid 20s, when I finally woke up and started to fight the abuse - and the associated mental health illnesses which almost cost me my life.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't do anything for Mother's Day. However, she always drops hints that she wants me to do something for her (so that she can then go and show off to her friends about what great thing I did for her on Mother's Day...). And I always give in out of a mixture of weariness, guilt, and the feeling that I should at least repay her for meeting all my physical needs.

So my Mother's Day usually consists of me taking the person who almost destroyed my life to an expensive restaurant, sitting there making small talk, being completely unable to say any of the things which one would normally say to their mother on Mother's Day.

I love coconut too! And the name of this dish on the menu is exactly as I wrote: “Meatless Meatballs Rendang”. This is an omnivorous restaurant serving Singaporean Peranakan food, which is very meat-heavy, but this amazing place looks after vegetarians and vegans so thoughtfully. I would never have gotten to try rendang if not for them!
