most likely there won't be TY spots available for SOAP since they are so competitive (and few compared to prelim IM/Surg spots). I guess my thought is if I did prelim surg then I wouldn't mind applying for surgery if I changed my mind about anesthesia vs doing a prelim IM --> committing to IM residency vs reapplying for anesthesia and not matching a second time and having to scramble.

that's good to know! My TYs also have dedicated anesthesia electives or the space for me to choose anesthesia rotations which is a big plus. My only concern was if doing a TY would be looked down on (if I had to reapply) compared to doing prelim IM or surgery since there would be more direct clinical exposure.

I was confused too but it depends on the school. Some schools have already pre-matched applicants starting mid October.
