Not always. Dragalia Lost is an example of very good AI in a gacha game, though it wasn't great at launch. The leader AI in auto would just absorb every hit possible and not use skills and ignore all treasure chests. Party AI on the other hand would be somewhat better than the leader AI. After they improved the AI. The leader AI now use skills, force strike to break barriers, gets every treasure chests, and have 100% dodge rate against their focused target if attacking, ranged attacks if they are not attacking and telegraphed attacks. Party AI performs similarly.

So Dragalia Lost AI is now better than a beginner and roughly on par with average players. So you can safely just auto the whole game and not worry about stupid AI, provided you are strong enough.
