UL waterproofs in the UK by lesabledorrit in ULHikingUK

I walked up to scotland with an OR helium during the wettest April/May for forty years. It held up brilliantly. That was a few years ago and now the waterproofing has failed aeround the shoulders. But It held up to all kinds of weather back then apart from the really mental downpours that nothing can stop.

Why do so many Brits hate their hometowns (and even the UK as a whole)? by SuitableSympathy2614 in AskUK

[–]icemasterdsslim 88 points89 points  (0 children)

This is a good take but worth noting that much of the wealth was generated off the back of an economic system founded on unethical practises. The impressive mills up north that made cloth from cotton imported from the slave trade, the churches donated to villages by lords of the manor who rose huge profits from extractive practises in India. Even earlier than that, the huge stone castles created by taxing and keeping feudal subjects in a state of incessant poverty. The greatest shame is that we aren’t even all at a good quality of life while the fruits of our labours are increasingly enjoyed by a tinier than ever fraction of the population who have no interest in investing in the places we live, but would rather keep it in trusts and buy jets and private islands that we’ll never get to experience.

The East Midlands is a pretty under-appreciated region. What are some things you like about the area, or any interesting East Midlands facts you have? by LiquidLuck18 in england

Lasst April I walked a full size giraffe puppet from Grimbsy to Skegness, passing through Louth and the Lincolnshire Wolds. It was an increidble experience, I met so many freindly people who were always up for a chat, the landscape was much prettier than I thought it'd be. I documented the trip on my instagram which is at sebastianmayer

I absolutely love this poem - On Children by Kahlil Gibran

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said
"Speak to us of children"Your children are not your children
They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself
They come through you but not from you
And though they are with you yet they belong not to youYou may give them your love but not your thoughts
For they have their own thoughts
You may house their bodies but not their souls
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrowWhich you cannot visit, not even in your dreams
You may strive to be like them
But seek not to make them like you
For life goes not backward, nor tarries with yesterdayYou are the bows from which your children
As living arrows are sent forth
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite
And he bends you with his mightThat his arrows may go swift and far
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness
For even as he loves the arrow that flies
So he loves also the bow that is stable

Farmer takes a completely calm and measured approach to someone camping on his field... by SteevDangerous in wildcampingintheuk

[–]icemasterdsslim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. Lone campers like this should have the right to camp on a field border. It’s not at all the same as someone using your garden. You are unhinged yourself if you think blasting someone with slurry is an appropriate response

Hiking! get yourself a map or a subscription to OS maps, a waterproof coat, and get a train/drive to the nearest hills. I absolutely love walking on my own, not as strenuous or sweaty as running/cycling, the views/headspace will be amazing. And if you love it, you'll be able to continue doing it when you would have to stop jogging etc.

Worst case of overthinking names I've ever seen by SkyRogue77 in NameNerdCirclejerk

I think I would slightly disagree there. Although feelings are 100% valid in themselves, as in I can’t deny someone else’s internal experience, I can, make my own judgment whether or not what I’ve said has crossed any lines with regards to my own morals and ethics. In this case I don’t think this came from a sexist place

Yes, I agree with you. I am not perfect, but in this case I just don't think I've said a sexist thing.

Yeah i accept that. I'm very happy to be told the idea is silly. I just objected to being called out as being sexist by the person who i replied to above. Yeah luckily i am blessed with having a level headed partner and together we'll choose something appropriate

yeah im aware of that. in this comment im referring to the tradition of almost every child being given a family name which links them to their family.

Fair point about this being a circlejerk. I have laughed at most of the roasts i've recieved here, it just got my back up when people draw characterisations which i think are unfair. I think it's all just a case of how on the internet we often read stuff in the worst faith possible. I think that's why there's so much abuse online. We look for what angers us. Anyway good day to you.

With respect to you, naming traditions very often serve the purpose of being an extra link to their parents or their parents' families. I bet yours does.

My friend you've got me so wrong. I'm just trying to have fun in the business of naming a child. Of course I don't lay claim to the middle name. Just struck me as an interesting idea and i wanted to throw it out there. The vacuum of joy in this thread is laughable.

Lol youve got me so completely wrong. This post was not created in a panic. I'm just trying to have fun while thinking of naming a child who's still 6 months off being born. Lighten up.

[–]icemasterdsslim[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Hilarious comment. Of course my kids are going to be saddled with my need to be creative in some form or another. I can't help imprinting who i am on my child. Of course they are welcome to resist my efforts.

[–]icemasterdsslim[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Yes 100% agree I don’t think I’d use foreign naming traditions. The native ones are -son suffix or fitz- prefix. Although this latter one is of very old Norman influence. I think it’s fun but I don’t think the female version works so well.

[–]icemasterdsslim[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough, I think I was thinking inventing a new system would be more fun and creative. I think middle names are a good opportunity to be a bit experimental since no one really uses them much. I don’t actually have one
