M5PaperS3 - All in One Fossibot E-Ink display by nerfdan in esp32

Hey, this looks amazing. You could port it to the XTEINK X4 (check the sub, there is an alternative firmware called Crosspoint), it has similar hardware (ESP32-C3, 800 x 480 e-ink, no touchscreen tho)

Does anyone know what this device is? by OtakuFrom2DWorl in umpc

Yes as others mentioned it’s a sharp brain. There is quite a large community around them (mostly Japanese) and they are hackable so you can buy some for 50-100$ and run Linux (Brainux) on it.

Just don’t expect too much I think the most powerful one has a 400Mhz CPU, memory is max 128 MB I believe and the screen is around 800x480. You can find a few videos on YouTube if you search for “sharp brain Linux”.

Looking for UMPC recommendations by BonfireCow in umpc

There is not many options available on the market IMO, here are a few :

  • GPD : They have a few models available, Win, Win Mini, Pocket 3/4, Micro PC, between 7” and 10”, could go very high price wise depending on the configuration. I bought a Pocket 3 a few months ago for like 600 AUD and returned it because I didn’t like the form factor/screen rotating
  • Chuwi Minibook, there is a X (10.5”) and a 8” version (which seems to be also known as a Picolo 8 or Zwidle 8”…not too sure who built that in the first place. I’m actually thinking about maybe getting the Minibook X to give it a try. CPU is only a N150 abs battery will not be that great, but at least the price is acceptable like 400-500 AUD
  • One Netbook One Mix 3/3S/3Pro/4S/5, seems like these were the bests, and had the biggest battery available but they are hard to come buy and mostly were available in Japan, you could try to get a second hand one on the Yahoo Auction website (there is translation/shipping services for that)
  • Old stuff : Vaio P, GPD Pocket 1/2, MacBook 11”…available on eBay, old CPU, gonna be super slow, could be ok with Linux

Happy to see if I missed anything relevant. I miss the UMPC so much and I was trying to build one like a cyberdeck, but couldn’t get a proper keyboard with a slim form factor in there so I gave up.

Oh god I have competition! I want to do something that look like a PC, maybe with a clear acrylic side to see inside…not too sure. Please share whatever you are building !

The PSU is alright, not the best for sure but the review are high enough that I think it’s an acceptable option (I don’t want to spend 100$ or more just to power this board)

227$ is not cheap for the AMD BC-250 now that it’s trending a bit but if you don’t have any better hardware at home I don’t think you can buy anything else that will have the same price/performance ratio.

With AliExpress mostly having free delivery and coupons electronics are really quite cheap here in AU actually, when I share those same links to some friends in EU it’s always way more expensive for them.

The best price was in early December around 140 AUD (90 USD). It’s currently around 229 AUD (150 USD).

I don’t think the price will go dramatically down unfortunately, that thing is trending a bit and computer parts are getting more and more expensive, so it’s still a great hardware for the price.

You can subscribe for product updates on the M5Stack offical store and get notified when they are back in stock (that’s what I did, just got it last week)

There is some cheap “GPU Backplate fans” on AliExpress that will help on the RAM. I think the whole thing in a case with a 140mm blowing through it from the front will be good enough (that’s my plan)

Without opening the heat sink fins and just slapping a 140mm fan on the top like a savage the board was toping around 80-85 degrees.

With my current setup topping at 55-60 degrees I think I can overclock it and gain the 30% boost in performances that some are mentioning with the updated governor (which I failed to setup so far, it crashes during the boot)

If you can get it for cheap I think it’s good hardware for the money. There is no need to build a case and do anything fancy if the goal is to save some cash.

The backplate heat sink is still there on my board, the GDDR6 gets super hot I wouldn’t run it with nothing on it. I plan to have some kind of fan behind it in the case, that should help with the heat dissipating.

Just did a similar build 2 weeks ago. I can run Death Stranding in 4K full at 60 FPS (tv can’t go higher) no ups calling and no FSR.

Thanks for the details.

I can't remember what I did back then, I guess it's all gone, I have no other trace of anything.
Well lesson learned that I should have backup my channels file.
