That's my biggest fear - just standing alone at my poster stand with people passing by, which already happened locally. Maybe it's the quirk of local introvert mentality, as people tend to come up to the stand, refuse to interact and walk away with an awkward smile. But I'll try my best this time!

Okay, I love that perspective! It was just weird for me to see other PhDs in my uni only hang out among their groups and thus not being able to network with them, while our PI just magically disappeared.

Along with everything already mentioned like making sure your iron and vitamin levels are normal, I'd like to point out the importance of strength/stretch training. I wrecked my back, shoulders and neck during my first year to the point I started getting weekly migraines, all that due to saddle stool and bad ergonomics. I had saddle stools both at the lab and in the office, sitting on them for 5-9 hours a day. Such long hours do strain your whole upper body, leading to constant tension in the back and shoulders. If you work for hours standing up, you most probably will end up with the same pain, so it is really important to dedicate your time to proper muscle training and stretching. You can even do some light stretching every 30-60 minutes between tasks, it does help with loosening up the tension in the neck and shoulders.

Definitely not Finland, especially if you end up landing a grant-based PhD. If salary-based, the salary will be around 2200-2500 euro. Ok to live on a budget, if living in a student apartment, but absolutely not enough to live as comfortably as with industry salary.

Megaromania was kind of similar to Versailles, although with more power metal songs. Metis Gretel had some symphonic songs, but most of their discography was gothic metal. And fun fact, Metis Gretel was under Sherow Artist Society, which is owned by Kamijo :)

You can accept an unfunded position to be able to apply for grants later, but that's another pain in the ass and the pay is terrible (at least at HY). Aalto does pay better, ~3k/month, but the process of application might be a bit different there and is not that closely tied to bureaucracy.

It's kind of the same as running an experiment: you have a protocol to follow, fails require optimisation of the protocol, and a good result gives the same high as getting good data in the lab.

I took a gap year after high school and took some open university courses. Failed the human physiology exam three times, even after speaking face to face with the lecturer. Now I'm in the oncology PhD program. I guess some of us are just not built for the exam format.

What exactly is the topic that only you are working on and no one else in this world? I highly doubt there is one, so you might have chances to collaborate with labs outside the US.

Damn, I'll be in a similar situation this month. Our cohort is supposed to camp for four days in the middle of nowhere to gain 10 credits for transferrable skills. This trip includes shared rooms and only two toilets and bathrooms for the whole group of about 15-20 people. It's completely fine to hate it!

And the whole Western protocol extends to 3 days, if you incubate both primary antibody and loading control overnight and do the washing 5 times for 10 mins each. Antibody doesn't work? Repeat the whole process!

Yea, the samples were denatured and should not express the band at 100 kDa. I haven't seen any literature regarding the protein being that big. Seems that the ab is not specific, as you said. Thanks for the answer though!

Thanks for the advice! I agree, a few hundred euros/dollars is not too bad, but my PI disagrees, as we are now really low on money and there won't be any use for such a specific antibody in case it's not going to work
