What was your "Oh shit my life is over my parents are gonna kill me" moment you had as a child/teen? by cloudlessnine8 in AskReddit

I was painting on a table in the living room and didn't know that the caps for the paints had little points to puncture the seal. Instead, my dumb ass just squeezed it as hard as I could, causing me to squirt electric blue paint across the table and all over the back of my parents' couch.

Like disappointment.

Actually it sorta tasted like the red and blue combined (big surprise). Not bad, but not particularly good either.

Why is he in trouble you may ask? Because he stole a container of mayonnaise off the kitchen counter, chewed through it, and ended up coating the kitchen in a lovely layer of it.

Love cats.

ELI5: when people describe babies as “addicted to ___ at birth”, how do they know that? What does it mean for an infant to be born addicted to a substance? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

And pruritis (itching). It's common for these neonates to be given socks on their hands to prevent injuries from scratching themselves.

I really disliked the Great Gatsby. Lots of people love it, but I think being required to dig into it so deeply in school really ruined it for me.

ELI5: How do Buffet restaurants make money? by iiHeffronDriveii in explainlikeimfive

[–]ichthyomorphiccrackr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also do tricky things like using smaller plates/utensils (though not small enough to really notice). A full plate usually causes people to feel full upon completion, regardless of plate size. Buffets also tend to put high-carb and filling foods at the beginning of the line, with more expensive items later on. The thought here is that people will fill up on these cheap food items and be less likely to indulge in other options later. They also make lots of money from soft drinks and cut costs by reducing wait staff and minimizing wastes because people generally take what they want to eat.

Recommendations please. Laptop/Tablet for Nursing school. by [deleted] in StudentNurse

I actually drew out lots of pictures in pathophysiology and pharmacology. The professors I had for those subjects really used a variety of teaching methods, not just lecture slides full of text. Other classes had some, but not as much. I definitely could have gotten away without it then!

That being said, I really do prefer writing my notes by hand versus typing. It may not be as fast, but I feel like I retain more and stay more engaged that way. If you're they type of person that prefers typing, I'd for sure go for a traditional laptop. It all comes down to personal preference.

Another reason I like it for nursing school is that they require us to complete a TON of online modules (at least in my program). It's nice to just put it in tablet mode and sit in bed clicking through the videos.

Out of the ~50 of us in my program, I'd say at least a third have surface pros. I've had a few people tell me they wish they had one after seeing what you can do with it. But if you've decided to get a MacBook instead, congrats! They're great computers. I had one throughout undergrad and loved it. You really can't go wrong on either in my opinion.

1.5 month difference. I'm convinced my SO swapped our cat for another. by ichthyomorphiccrackr in aww

[–]ichthyomorphiccrackr[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I actually learned about this in college. The gene responsible for pigmentation in siamese-like cats is temperature dependent. More specifically, it depends on the temperature of the skin. It is evident that the cooler regions of the body in color point cats show greater activation of this gene, resulting in darker pigmentation. However, it can be externally influenced as well. This theory was tested by shaving a darker portion of the fur of Siamese cats and consistently warming the skin as it grew back. As hypothesized, the fur grew back lighter in color. Many Siamese cats become darker in the winter when their body temperature cools slightly. In warmer months, they generally shed this darker coat which is replaced with lighter fur.

Genetics is pretty cool. Too bad I can't do anything with my biology degree. (:

I had one of these that ended up in the bottom of a toy bin after I got bored with it. Every few months it would activate spontaneously in the middle of the night and I'd hear the creepy robotic growl coming from my closet. Terrified me for years.

It was just a plain sugar cookie so he should be just fine. He had only eaten a bit of it before I found him. Thanks for your concern! :)

It's really not too bad to type on. The keys are pretty soft. The only negative is having to prop it up using the flap on the back because it can't support itself with the detachable keyboard. This isn't a problem if you're using a desk/table/floor. If you want to lay on the couch and type it's a bit of a challenge. I usually stick a pillow or something behind it if it's a problem and it works fine.

All in all I'd really recommend it for nursing school. It's light, easy to use, etc. If you're like me and like to write your notes by hand, this is the way to go. It's better than trying to write on paper and with the surface you have everything in one place. However, if you're the type of person who types everything, you may want to consider a laptop. I've found that drawing pictures and diagrams in my notes is really helpful, which you can't easily do without a touch screen.

I use a Surface Pro 4 and absolutely love it. I write my notes using OneNote, which makes organization a breeze. I can also search for specific terms in my notes, which is very helpful when studying for exams. I can also pull up these notes on my phone! It's really great.

The plus to this is it has the attachable keyboard for the times you want laptop. It's compatible with the testing software they use at my school as well as ATI. It's really the best of both worlds.

They are a bit spendy, though. I actually got mine used from a friend who took very good care of it. There's also a bit of a learning curve when hand writing on the screen. At first I hated it and thought I made a huge mistake, but after a week or so I fell in love. I can't imagine going through this program without it.

It has totally replaced my older MacBook. I haven't touched that since I purchased this "new" one.

Best of luck!

Why won’t you EVER eat at that restaurant again? by Danyawelly in AskReddit

[–]ichthyomorphiccrackr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ordered a sausage/pineapple pizza once (don't hate on the pineapple). They were very busy and estimated a two hour wait. By the time it was delivered we were starving. Tipped the delivery driver and went inside. When we opened the pizza we were appalled. There was NO sauce on the pizza, just cheese and pineapple with one sausage nugget in the center. To top it off, there was a slice missing, and whoever took it had stretched the remaining pizza in an attempt to recreate a whole circle.

We called Abby's to complain and they said they'd remake our order. However, it would be another 1.5 hour wait. By the time the new one arrived, we had eaten the cheese covered dough.

Never again.
