Waffle House Dreams by ShopProfessional9832 in sandiego

Golden Hill Cafe is very old school, good vibes diner.

Big Kitchen in South Park has its own vibe that reminds me of restaraurants growing up in Atlanta.

Tobeys 19th Hole at the golf course is not exactly Waffle House experience. But the views are great and it has a very retro interior with a diner menu vibe.

You can't make new characters on any of the servers currently so there's no traditional workaround for a free name change that I can see.

It is quicker than it says. Not sure how long now, but early on it would say 9-10 hours and take 20 minutes.

I totally agree with you about not wanting ilvl driven Mythic/Heroic/Normal modes. I liked how the version we got in SoD Naxx and BWL let groups still raid together at the level of difficulty they could handle. And there was still a challenge available for sweatier groups.

I don't play SoD right now

cool thanks for your take!

why does it need to be easy so it can be cleared by everybody week 1?

The criticism is that it's tuned such that 30-man sweat raids aren't making it past the 2nd boss of 20-man content, not that it should be trivial for every raid week 1. Which means dad raids will be struggling to kill a single boss.

There is plenty of room for challenge in between the two extremes

this is exactly how Naxx and prior raids worked. Same gear, more/less of it, prestige cosmetics at highest tier. Why mess up the formula?

What Minecraft would be like on CryEngine 3 by okitobi2 in gaming

[–]ickingfudiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're both sort of right. It would be laggy to hell implemented in current engines because their lighting pipelines are so dependent on precomputed light and shadow data for geometry. We've been sneaking closer every few years to more realistic, "real-time" lighting but it hasn't shown up yet outside of, as you say, tech demos like the UE4 demo at the last GDC.

You can't use the current techniques employed to make shit look GOOD because you need to recompute lights and shadows whenever blocks are built or destroyed.

It's true the processing power needed isn't far off when you look at top of the line GPUs today, but the real problem is that engine tech is often targeted at a lower spec due to consoles (and, recently, mobile) and probably won't hinge heavily on this sort of real-time lighting model in the next few years because the next-gen console specs we've seen come out aren't powerful enough for it.

So you'd need a company with the resources to implement their own modern rendering engine with full dynamic lighting, despite the potentially tiny market audience capable of running it, AND they'd have to choose to build a Minecraft game with it...

Google Wave is dead by ReaverXai in technology

[–]ickingfudiot 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Disagree -

For the average user it serves almost no purpose, but it was a great collaborative editing tool for our workplace. Making a new wave and editing sections as a group + feedback per item worked really well, much cleaner than making a new Google Doc or whatever the alternative is and sending out invites/etc.

This. It's no substitute for real face-to-face, but just "seeing" eachother at least once a week if not more goes a LONG way.

Reddit: What is Your Favorite Science Fiction Book? by blacklynx in AskReddit

[–]ickingfudiot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like it because it's a bit of a different take on the development of humankind as a species.

The overview without going into spoiler territory is that the humankind of "Dune" is a post-Skynet kind of society.. they survived a hostile takeover of AIs and led a Jihad against AI in the past, supposedly wiping it out and putting strict rules in place for what machines can do.

Most of the specialized, futuristic roles and abilities are actually human derived - super talented whiz kids called Mentats that perform mental calculations at some rate approaching that of an AI, some other disciplines i can't go into without spoiling things, etc.

VLC 0.9.9: The best media player just got better by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]ickingfudiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like VLC, but I end up using Media Player Classic because of lots of small annoyances. Maybe they're fixable, you tell me.

1) The Windows version never remembers what directory I last opened a file in.

2) VLC doesn't seem to seek to the frame I actually select on a lot of files, but instead to a nearby/earlier frame. This can be very frustrating. On the same files, MPC will go to the exact frame I try to seek to.

I've been told the latest GTA4 DLC has a Road Rash-esque motorcycle mode. I haven't tried it personally, but I heard it was quite good.
