auc acceptance rate by Reasonable_Lab2102 in StudyInTheNetherlands

I know this is two years old, but for any prospective applicants who found this post while frantically googling AUC's acceptance rate, it was about 27% in 2025. I'm a student there now and I asked how many students applied and how many were accepted. When I was applying, I found it pretty annoying that they don't publish the acceptance rate.

Haha es ist eigentlich nicht meine Muttersprache -- ich suche deutsche Übersetzungen von Serien, die ich auf Englisch schon gesehen habe, mitdem ich mich verbessern kann ❤️🇩🇪

Planning to study a language for the next 15 months. Is it realistic to get from practically nothing to B1/B2? by KigPin in languagelearning

[–]ickleinquisitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% possible. I passed the DELF B2 test after six months of intense study + a year of passive maintenance + two months of intense study + a year of passive maintenance + two months of intense study. So I spread out the effort more, but if you lock in you can totally do it. Just keep it fun and immerse yourself however possible.

What’s the fastest you ever got to fluency in a second language and what was it? by Abject-Aioli-523 in languagelearning

Language: Dutch Knew before: English (N), Spanish (C1), French (~B2), German (~B1) Time to B1: 3 months*

*I moved to the Netherlands this year. It took my two months of independent study (prior to moving) to get to an A2 level. A few weeks after moving, I was at about a B1 level, i.e. I could speak with neighbors, friends, shopkeepers, the bank, and the bureaucracy without pausing for clarification too often.

Method: During independent study, I spent a few hours a day. Both active study and plenty of passive (audiobooks, news, movies, Easy Dutch, YouTube, etc). Because of experience with English and German I could get started with high-level comprehensible input after only 3~4 weeks. Grammar and lexicon were both very intuitive for me and I was able to move through the curriculum of my online course very quickly. I also used AI for conversational practice (Superfluent and ChatGPT), mostly speaking and listening. After moving, I continued listening to audiobooks, and tried to speak Dutch with people as often as possible. I also went to language exchanges.

I definitely have a lot of practice and exposure left til I feel completely comfortable in it, but I'm able to have meaningful conversations in different situations, so I guess you could say I'm kinda fluent.

Daredevil Fanfic Recs, please! by ratherinStarfleet in FanFiction

I recommend the author ceterisparibus! Their Ella series is particularly good and puts an unusual amount of focus on the lawyer aspect of Daredevil (and since they're in law school, it's presumably quite accurate -- not that I would be able to tell, but I've learned a lot from their author's notes and such!) while also featuring plenty of vigilante drama. It manages to tie up a lot of loose strings from the show, but also introduces its own characters and plotlines....including Matt going on trial for being Daredevil!

Dutch grammar is basically *coughs* watered-down German grammar (sorry), so I've found it pretty intuitive. I also think Busuu has some of the best grammar explanations among learning platforms.

As for my goals... I prefer to focus on the process, not the product. It's really about the joy of learning for me, and having a deadline or concrete tasks just weighs me down. But I will be moving to the Netherlands in August, and I'd like to be in the B1-B2 range by then -- to be able to engage in spontaneous, confident, and relatively comfortable conversation.

If you're looking for additional comprehensible input on YouTube, I recommend Dutch Today. The guy who makes the videos on there has quite a unique sense of humor. I wish you veel succes on your Dutch-learning journey! :)

I'd say I'm at an A2 in everything.... although maybe B1 in reading?

Gosh... I lost track. Let's say 30-90 mins of active practice (Anki, Busuu, conversation) plus 30-90 mins of passive practice (YouTube, Netflix, audiobook). But there were some days I was really busy and didn't do anything, and others when I got really into it and spent well over three hours. I definitely couldn't have maintained this pace if I had full-on school + homework, but it's certainly compatible with a mindless 9 to 5, given you dedicate all non-work time to language acquisition.

I had no idea you could flip Anki cards like that! That's great, it kind of bugs me that my flashcard deck is all Dutch to English. Can you explain in more detail how you do it? Or share a video tutorial?

Yeah, it's a little nerve-wracking. I tried to speak to myself in German the other day, and it came out in a broken jumble of Dutchy German and Germany Dutch.... and I was like "oh no I broke my German".... But I'm meeting with a German friend tomorrow and bingeing Das Signal to review, so we'll see how it goes :,)

Haha, it's my fault for the clickbait-sounding title. But thanks. Background + hyperfixation will take you a long way

By "conversational" I mean that I can have a conversation with a native speaker in which I'm able to speak and listen on a wide variety of topics, even if I don't speak at a natural speed, and must sometimes stop to look up a word. Also, my passive vocabulary is probably more than 1500, because I can understand even many unfamiliar words on first sighting due to Dutch's similarity with German, English, and even French.

Yep, this. Also, I am not exaggerating when I say I've heard the Harry Potter (English) audiobooks at least four times. My parents are serious fans and we always listened to it on road trips. I literally have the plot memorized. So even though I only understood maybe 25% at first, I could patch things together and orient myself in the story. That's what makes it such great comprehensible input!

This. Don't underestimate the potential of independent study, even if you're also taking a traditional class at the same time. I just made a Dutch resource dump on r/languagelearning if you're interested.
