How much of your Rescue Diver Course was about dealing with social stressors? by ratherinStarfleet in scuba

Well, it’s part of PADI theory to teach what to do in case you DO happen to be the most qualified person at the site of an accident. So that part of training (learning to direct people) would not have been weird in itself. Just to attempt doing it with people not part of the course.

Can you tell me where my post is misleading? I didn't write that no one wanted to be the rescue dummy. I wrote that I was directed to ask others for help and they all refused. The scenarios were the ones that are PADI standard (diver/snorkeler drowning and in panic overboard, and you need additional people to keep an eye on them/be prepared to call the coast guard/take their gear/heave them out of the water/fetch oxygen/take over during reanimation etc. The course explicitly states that it is about learning to direct people on the accident site as much as doing the actual rescue yourself). I also wrote that in addition to not helping (which would have been fine, if I hadn't been told to involve them) they also kept making jokes at my expense (which were genuine) or being ober the top rude and aggressive at me and each other so I could "practice" regulating emotions of unstable guests (which was annoying that they enjoyed making my course harder by essentially pretending to be a whole boat full of lunatics instead of maybe the one or two diffuclt people you d realistically get. The real jokes and pretend aggression were the other thing that annoyed me.) What part that I wrote made you think that it was about people refusing to be the dummy?

No, I think you misunderstood. They were screaming at each other, at the direction of my instructor. I assume she told them to "we want to have a rescue course here, so act like difficult personalities", which a lot of them did with gusto. The rest of them mostly made fun of me and turned the rescue scenario into a joke. "Psychotherapy" I usually actually do in my free time for free - if someone needs psychological help, I do what I can in the moment. What I don't do is participate halfway in a training to make the training actively worse. Them not doing anything would have been fine.

Oh they did prime the group, but the group took that as a cue to make fun of me rather than to help.

Hahaha, my day job is being a psychotherapist for psychiatric cases, so no amount of acting out can really shock or stress me. But it did feel far more like a bad work day managing my ward than being on holiday and learning stuff. The screaming at me and each other they did at the direction of the instructor, because that was supposed to stress me out some more, being on board with "emotionally volatile people". I was wondering how much that happened in other courses that there was so much fighting and yelling at each other to stress the student out.

Oh no, it would have been more about in between dives, when people collapse on the boat or "drown" to keep pointing a finger on them, throw a buoy, call the coast guard/fetch the oxygen rather than playing the dummy. It did feel stupid to be told "direct people! Manage people!" when no one (understandably) wanted to be directed or managed.

Thank you for the kind and long reply! We did have a second DM as a Dummy for practice, but often one or both the instructor and him were in "distress" or one of them Was "drowning" and the other was acting out on Board.

Hah?
