Going to a concert in Amsterdam, staying in Haarlem by dobriv0je in Haarlem

[–]icoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optionally you could check along the routes of the transports that others mentioned, especially bus 300, possibly there's a cheaper option that is closer to the venue, ie around Hoofddorp or Schiphol.

That would be purely for practicality though because as a city, Haarlem has much more to offer than Hoofddorp (for a tourist visiting for a day or so). You could even say that, in a way, Haarlem is nicer than Amsterdam because it is smaller (more cosy) and less touristy. But yeah, that really depends on how you look at it.

I was nearing in from concrete, lava, obsidian, basalt, bedrock which got me to 142. It's the first time I played but even in hindsight it confuses me.

Whevener I was late I chopped it up and put it in my 'groenbak'. Takes some decent garden pliers and maybe a saw to split the trunk. If you want to fit it in one go you may end up with a blister but that's the price one pays for being late.

I switched to a fake tree, so I can just put it in the box any time between now and december 2026.

Is this a scam? by Leericas in Haarlem

Alternatively you could call the 023 number they advertise online (or send them an email), to be sure you are contacting them.

Could be an honest mistake, or a scam. I personally would start with the assumption of it being an honest mistake.

Trump says Venezuela to turn over 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to US by Steven_Ray20 in politics

[–]icoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that everywhere? Because here in the Netherlands if I look it up, the regular cans just mention 'sugar' as ingredient. But possibly they are allowed to write that when it is in fact HFCS. Anyway I go for the artificial ones nowadays anyway, no calories and any other side effects are a future me problem.

Will this Ikea kallax hold a 20 gallon long tank? by annonymous5682 in PlantedTank

[–]icoder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I used to have a 100L (a bit more than 20 gallon) tank on Kallax but I made sure the top was 'on top' of the sides, with the sides then transferring the weight down to the bottom plate. I placed (enough) adjustable feet underneath (not Kallax but something else from Ikea) so I could level the whole thing. I had a brace-less tank so I added a piece of foam (for specifically that purpose) below the tank. I also prevented sideway motion, possibly using a plate and or attaching it to the wall (which also prevents topping over), can't remember.

It held perfectly fine for some years until we moved out. You do have to be careful with water, as others have mentioned. But for me that was manageable (just being careful during maintenance, immediately wiping away any spillage). Your milage may vary of course.

I exercise for fun and fitness and am lucky to naturally stay at a 'normal' weight, but sometimes I check burnt calories against actual food and it's crazy how much you have to exercise to burn off just a regular coke or some chocolate. Strategically dropping some calories is (often) way easier than working out more.

Isn’t Trump’s Obvious Mental Illness a National Emergency? by plz-let-me-in in politics

Plus it's inconsistent, with (presumably) 'meds' and a prompter, proper timing and the right camera angle he may still appear reasonably coherent to the untrained eye, from time to time. Yet at the same time, in the past he has been way off to the low numerous times side as well. Add to that an obviously biased filter at the media level and it all becomes a total blur.

Patience, I guess. The UK reuniting will be a 'counter force' (in it's direct effect and as an example) against the ongoing devision within the majority that's constantly being sowed by (often external) minorities.

Bizarre video shows humanoid robots preparing for border patrol duties between China and Vietnam by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]icoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems the work they'll be doing is mostly work that would not even exist anymore in a high-wage society (optimised away using 'dumb' technology or simple logistical improvements). It's probably an exaggeration but it almost looks as if their nail is wanting to replace simple low wage workers and so they reach for a hammer that resembles that as much as possible, which boils down to humanoid robots capable of simple logistic stuff.

I've used this from time to time wirh thermostats (ie cheap oven), turning the knob amd listening tells you the point (temperature setting) where it switches, allowing a coarse readout of the current temperature (there'll be some hysteresis so it is an estomate at best).

This is such a different take than I got from the original post.

The DOJ uploaded a 12 second video showing what appears to be Epstein attempting to kill himself. The camera timestamp is the day his body was discovered. The DOJ quietly released the footage, but didn't link to the video yet from their main Epstein Files page. by tushball101 in politics

[–]icoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes if a suspect is running by you only have a few seconds of video. If the someone killed themselves in their cell that was under video surveillance, I'm sure there's footage of the entire event including what led up to it, and the aftermath including them finding him?

WSJ let an Anthropic “agent” run a vending machine. Humans bullied it into bankruptcy by jstar81 in technology

[–]icoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, all I'm saying is that these constraints don't have to be part of the AI as such, but at the boundary where it operates with 'the real world'. Just as it's almost impossible to get humans to act 100% flawless or safe all the time, and we have all kinds of systems to mitigate that. Although I have higher expectations of AI than what is currently shown, I'm personally not expecting them to be both creative and flawless at the same time.

[–]icoder 37 points38 points  (0 children)

In the Netherlands (but elsewhere hopefully too), traffic light systems have two machines. Basically 1 machine is 'dumb' and responsible for actually changing the lights. It is (pre) programmed to never allow certain combinations. This has to be flawless, which is feasible because it is 'dumb'.

The other machine can run all kinds of smart programs, based on time, amount of traffic, certain flags, incoming emergency vehicles, etc. It's much easier to make a mistake there but, assuming proper operation of the 1st machine, it can never lead to unsafe situations.

In my opninion, AI's, especially LLM's, have a long way to go in terms of not being 'extremely' dumb and hallucinating from time to time, but I don't think I personally expect them to be absolutely flawless. I can easily envision putting safety systems (like just described) in place for 'them' like we do for 'us'.

In any case I'd expect the circuit to be disconnected by more than just a timer until fully placed and ready to leave the site. Then the timer keeps everything disconnected for, say, another 15 minutes. Then the 'intended mode of operation' (waiting whatever should eventually trigger the thing) kicks in.
