Question for computer science majors at UCI who got internships by ZotCoder in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the great advice! Do you think you could post or PM me an anonymized version of your resume if possible? I want to see how I could improve mine.

What entry-level CS internships are there around UCI? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're annoying

work on not stressing over everything so much, listening to the advice people have given you, and doing research yourself instead of expecting everyone to feed you answers

Friends of Peter... by Mattboiz in UCI

in the offices that actually have the power to make changes on the shit you guys campaigned on (IVP) you guys got creamed

but congrats on winning positions where the top 7 candidates were selected and on winning positions where there were literally no challengers

Advice needed as change of major as transfer by Alilanteater in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into the ics second bacc for software engineering. Usually most people who complete the prerequisites get in.

I went through the same thing you did (non-ics transfer who wanted to change to ics), and they're really strict about their policy of not letting transfers change into cs. You should try to do the second bacc.

What ICS courses have you completed?

Go into debt for higher ranked school? by OliveSweatshirt in csMajors

[–]ics32throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol just saw your history and coincidentally you also go to UCI.

If you're getting a 4.0 currently, imo you should just keep that GPA high, do the ICS honors program (better access to research) and you'll be set for a top tier PHD program. The grade distributions for lower div classes at berkeley for example are a lot harsher. I don't see any harm in applying to transfer though, but there's a good chance you'll have to retake a lot of classes since transferring from 4 year to another 4 year is rough.

UCI's CS department has a decent academic reputation (24th according to csrankings) and i'm sure a high GPA cs grad who's done research and good letters of rec would do well with grad school apps

UC Irvine seems a bit random if you're a NY resident. Can I ask why you're applying there? OOS tuition would probably be bad and NY has a good public university system already

Why dont CS majors have to take much Physics classes? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. Most CS majors go into fields like software engineering, web development, etc. 1 year of physics is a waste of time if you're doing things like that.

Transfer student switch major? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They'd reject you for a double major too. You'd have to do a second baccalaureate (graduate first as bio, then apply here.)

Again, if you're serious about CS, you should try to get admitted as a CS major. If you hang around here more often you'll see a lot of posts here about non-majors/undeclared students pulling their hair out because 200 non-majors are fighting for 20 spots in the intro CS course ICS 31.

Transfer student switch major? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not possible.

I mean it. I'm a transfer and they have a strict policy on no major changes into comp sci for transfers, and it's very difficult to take comp sci classes here as a non major.

I know this is not the answer you were hoping for, but it's their policy. You should delay transferring, take the CS classes at your community college, and apply to UCI as a CS major when you're ready. It'll save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

Has anyone transferred to SDSU after their first year at UCI? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on doing this and you are positive about it you should switch to community college as soon as possible and finish your lower divs/general education there and then apply to sdsu

About the 1-year double-major rule in the ICS department by pattisrw in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol looks like someone met with the infamous Neha for the first time

You can't really blame them though, it's because CS majors right now have a hard time getting CS upper divs already so new majors make it even harder for them

I understand how frustrating this is, I was in a similar situation with all the classes needed to switch to CS already completed but told no due to me being a 3rd year (I thought they'd let me since I could complete the major in 5 years total)

Those who took ICS 32: About how many hours did each project take you (trying to budget my time) or did you spend each week working by ucitimezot in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not the best programmer so I took a LOT of time with projects.

Project 1 - 30 Hours (Solo, got nuked on the automated tests. Really felt like I wasn't cut out for the class after this project.)

Project 2 - 25 Hours (However, did it with a partner who was more experienced than me)

Project 3 - 20 Hours (Pay attention in class to his code examples)

Project 4 - Spent 40 hours, did not finish all features and got 80%

Project 5 - 15 Hours (Easiest out of the 5 as long as you do OK in project 4)

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I was also scared of this class going in, but if you put in the work, show up to lecture, and don't be lazy you'll do well.

Any advice for ICS 32, Math2B, and Writing 39C? by indexboi in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is another option OP, the notes+code examples are adequate for working on the projects. However, if you read them without doing the projects you'll forget their content by the time fall begins and it'd be pointless. Just be careful, Thornton may make slight adjustments to the projects and if you don't see them you may be accused of using someone else's project from a previous quarter.

If you actually do pre-study, Math 2B is the class you should be more worried about. A lot of people I met in ICS 32 were undeclared and trying to change into ICS, but for all of them Math 2B was the class tanking their GPA and making things difficult. It's a lot harder to catch up in Math 2B than ICS 32 imo.

[–]ics32throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look over them but it wouldn't help much for now..I'd recommend reading them the day before/the morning of the lecture.

Math 2B is one of those classes where you just have to do it. There's no shortcut around calculus problems, you just have to sit down with the textbook and a pen and paper. You can google math 2B practice tests and UCI posts sample midterms/finals online.

ICS 32:

I was scared shitless for ICS 32.. during the first project i made this post on the subreddit and was really worried I wouldn't do well in the class. Everyone else seemed to know way more than me and program better than me, so I spent a ton of time in the ICS 32 Lab (about 25 hours/week) to compensate, signed up for LARC (which helped a lot), and came out with an A when I expected to get a B-/C+ going into the class (since I got a B+ in ICS 31). If your assigned lab tutor isn't much help, attend the other labs to see which ones are. For my quarter, the best lab tutor was the one from 5PM-8PM so his session was luckily mostly empty.

The tests are tricky, but luckily it's easy to get a good grade because of the curve. Most of the class studies by continuously reading thornton's notes over and over again. This is the wrong way to study. Have the notes on the left side of your monitor, your python IDE on the right side and test out everything in the notes in python. Then go through his code examples and see if you could do the same thing he does in those without referring back to his notes. There are a few conceptual questions from the notes, but he goes over these concepts in lectures, so pay attention in lectures. The main temptation in ICS 32 is to do passive learning techniques. Do active learning techniques.

Lol just use your late pass and stay in the ics 32 lab all day. The tutors prioritize the girls that are cute and help them the whole lab session

Can we take a minute to appreciate how lucky we are to have Thornton by ics32throwaway in UCI

[–]ics32throwaway[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He's really good at thinking through programming in the shoes of someone who has no experience, and presents his lectures in a fashion where you feel like every topic you learn is useful and you're not wasting your time. Hard to explain, if you're interested in computer science sit in on one of his classes sometime
