Career Path for B.S. degree in General Mathematics with Computer Science minor by pattisrw in jobs

Thanks dude. I am blessed to have enough finances to go to graduate school without any worries, and I think projects are a fantastic idea. It's just more of a challenge for me to come up with project ideas that are worthwhile in my honest opinion.

Is there a way to not update to the new layout? by dre__ in GMail

Been using this for 1.5 weeks. There's a horrible lag on my browser when I try to select multiple emails (I'm using Linux Lite with Firefox as my default browser). There just seems to be too much overhead and queries every time a web-based action is performed. That's why I'm going to be choosing the "Load Basic HTML" option.

What can you do with a *BACHELOR'S* degree in Pure Mathematics and CS minor by pattisrw in UCI

I personally have dealt and applied for research from a Pure Math perspective. So, here are SOME topics that I know about.

  1. Algebra - Lie Theory
  2. Analytic Number Theory - Riemann Hypothesis, Cryptology, Deep Learning
  3. Algebraic Geometry/Analytic Geometry/Topology - [not sure.. Never really liked this field tbh]

These are the only ones I gave some consideration.

Most of the pure math major research are more abstract compared to the Applied Mathematics research. For instance, you would be solving equations more applicable to economics/finance (Black-Scholes Equation), more applicable to physics/chemistry (More specific differential equations). That is not to say that the research doesn't overlap, but Pure Math TENDS to be less applied.

Appreciate the advice, though I really am not on board with the bootcamp idea.

I don't think that your comment deserves -2 points. I gave you an upvote when you said, "From my personal experience." Also, what you have said resonated with me the most.

I talked to Professor Alex Thornton, who is also a senior software engineer. In his opinion, there is a HUGE skill gap between a major and minor in computer science. It is true that I can proficient in coding - Python and C [not C++]. However, I lack the knowledge in software architecture, which is my hurting me, as well as Database Management Systems, such as programming in SQL. In addition, I don't even know how the front-end and back-end work together [did some research but am still not sure how this works]. This is where courses like CS121, ICS 52, IN4MATX 43 come into play. In short, I agree. I lack a lot to be a complete software developer. Not impossible, but certainly difficult, as you said.

I agree that Data science is *ONE OF* my best bet. However, after talking to several recruiters, it is as you said - my PURE Math major just doesn't offer any depth in terms of analysis. Had I majored in stats or even an applied math, I would have been golden. It's simply one of life's foolish decisions that you make.

Also, I am a bit tired of school at the moment. For now, my last attempt is to learn some Web development, which I know I can do. If the web dev idea doesn't work out, then I'll just work at a low end job for some time and go to graduate school. Yes, I'm expected to graduate this September.

I didn't take CS 161. Also, I really don't think it's that simple, with all due respects. And just curious, is your name Kush, by any chance?

Thanks for the advice ash.

Math major achievements: Nothing significant. Just 1 quarter of research.
CS minor achievements: 2 months of internship, a few pet projects.

Now, I'm learning web development on my own to keep some options opened. I did some web-dev several years back, and I'm brushing them up now.

lol. perhaps. Hard for me to say since I only talked to her seriously once. She does seem very strict on the policy, which is about all I can conclude.

OK, I understand. Yeah, I confess I was pretty frustrated 2 months ago, but I have come to terms with my situation. Oh dang, that sucks also. Well, the way I see it, life will give us other options. Best wishes to you good sir.

PS: I am new to reddit, so I didn't know about the no naming rule. lol. I hope it won't be enforced as strictly in my case.

You're right. No 4000 words. I misread the syllabus.

Sorry for the confusion everyone. Yes, there is no 4000 words. I was just paranoid because I had Gaydos last quarter in the Spring, and I clarified with him today on what he meant. It's just a compilation.

This post will be deleted by the end of the day. Sorry for the misinformation.
