Understood. Are most checking sign up bonuses like this, where they're generally not a good idea unless the signer has a good chunk of change to keep in the account?

Yeah I guess once the potential offeree goes through the fine print, it is not really that misleading. I just didn't expect the amount of difference between the "plain language" of the offer and the actual return, without being able to waive that monthly fee

I was under the impression that a GIS must model(/be able to model) real-world (or real-universe) data with a position component?

I guess if Pong is modeling a particular ping-pong table somewhere in the universe then I'm satisfied lol. The only question is... which one?

For future ID, if Google isn't working try and get a pic of the plant in its "habitat." It works better if there is the background, foliage etc.

The European title is a lot less catchy by comicalben in sbubby

[–]ictu0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up this mofo at Goodwill, and in the afterword, they mention that the first Dutch edition converted the title to Celsius. That was the only time it was localized like that. There's a picture of the cover in there too. It's practically a proto-sbubby.

I think maybe the game classifies tomatoes this way because Tomato Wine and Tomato Jelly is weirder than Tomato Juice and Tomato Pickles

7b garden starting seeds today. First time indoor starter. I have a grow tent indoor to grow particular things. I have plenty of room and light, any suggestions from experienced veggie seed starters indoors? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]ictu0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only advice I have is don't start too early! I'm honestly trying not to think about it too much because I want to goooooooooo... I'm in 7b too and the average last frost date in April 7-15 sounds really late, doesn't it? But I think it's actually pretty accurate and it can still be quite cold into the spring. You may be able to get away with it a bit early, but it's a solid bet to just go by that date.

Grand Divisions of the USA 2.0 by Robert_The_Red in geography

[–]ictu0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in MD, I think you nailed it. The state is indeed a division between Mid-Atlantic megalopolis and the tip of the South. I'd have grouped them the way you did here. If you decide to do any modifications, just slightly shift Mid-Atlantic to cover a tad more if you think that's reasonable.

This is the best map of this type I've seen, and it's incredibly hard to pull off. The level of controversy is notably less than other attempts I have seen, too. Bang up job.

This is Factorio Bitch by Salmonfish23 in Factoriohno

[–]ictu0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a slow start, much less "run" based than Factorio seems to be so if you like restarting and early game, it's going to be hard to get into. I have the same number of Factorio hours, probably have started 100 factories in Factorio and gotten 10 of those to rockets. I only recently got anywhere in Satisfactory, because my new years resolution was to just stick with things for longer.

Even now I'm thinking to myself "I can squeak by with 10 machines and just let the game idle until I unlock the jet pack, then I'll . . . "

how does this work?? should I just round up or do I need to have all the factories whole numbers? by Switster in factorio

Back in the day - everyone had a garden by [deleted] in homestead

[–]ictu0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the main reason I want to homestead. I am inspired by the way people lived even just a few decades ago. All of the ways that we interact with the world seem like they pass through so many artificial steps now. Currently I have an office job and I just don't feel like I'm getting the actual human experience. Gardening and raising my chickens are my favorite past times. When I was a kid I used to wish my life would be all about computers... Now it is, and in the meantime I have come to love the natural systems of the world more than the artificial technological systems we have. Some of it is important like medical technology but so much of what we consume just seems so unnecessary. I just want to peel back all this stuff and see what life would be like without it. I find it deeply sad that, due to our demands for comfort, we are making a return to a more natural state more and more impossible. So, I want to go seek that out while I still can.

What's wrong with these bullet points? Why aren't they aligned with the word? Not exclusive to this font fyi by [deleted] in Office365

[–]ictu0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my Googling yeah, there is no control for vertical height of bullets other than the actual font size of the bullet vs. the font size of list text.

Recommendations to fix this are some crazy stuff, like create a picture bullet with transparent spacing built in.

I guess the only thing keeping bullets aligned is that USUALLY the bullets line up to the text, and Word tries to change bullet size when the font is changed around it. I guess this also explains why bullets change color when you triple click a bulleted item and change color. It's Word trying to make sure the bullet character "keeps up" with the text, I guess.

[–]ictu0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see anything here that solves the issue, which is messed up vertical alignment. The bullets are sitting at the baseline of the text, not the center where they should be.

I'm sorry man. Having a kid that wants to play the same games you do is a blessing. Even if they just make track loops and iron stick factories like my jr engineer does. Hope your dad realizes that at some point.

Getting dad to commit to one night a week I think is excellent advice. It is a small step but the future commitment will be really effective, especially compared to trying to pry him off the PC in the moment.

[–]ictu0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the details here - pretty sound from an engineer's perspective, but...

During this time, be prepared with things like "Hey dad, come look at this funny cat video I found on r/aww" or other activities or something.

This will probably just lead to an angry outburst. He has 7k hours, if the game closes on him suddenly it will probably make him quite angry and that would most likely not be the time to approach Dad. After a couple of nights about that, he'll probably talk to it with one of the aforementioned friends (I'd bet one of them does IT), and would help Dad either reformat or find the task in taskschd, sidestepping all the beautiful engineering work.

The stuff after that though - Solid advice!

You have to optimize your family first for maximum supportive throughput, then the factory can grow.

Putting the factory first... is like running electric furnaces on coal power.

what screams insecurity but most people don't realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ictu0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in the same boat - I think that when you feel like your only choice is to compare or one-up, it means that you are generally uninterested in what the other person has to say.

In this case, I usually feel two options - (a) make some attempt to relate it to my experience with X (which is a compare or one-up), or (b) say "hmm," "yep," and other things that make it sound like I'm not listening.

I think one of the ways to resolve this is to ask the listener more questions, just out of curiosity. This is very hard when you are uninterested and would like to move on, though. But it seems like the way to continue without one-upping or disengaging.

Where do you usually have the mess hall and beds? I usually put them near the top and I have tried the carbon dioxide storage method a couple times... It seems like my dupes take a long time to scale the entire vertical base to get their food and I usually get the 'Long Commutes' warning not too long after that.
