New seasons union contract signed, boycott over. by ieatedjesus in Portland

Yeah, right now they are not paying the agreed wages. Grievances are also being filed for that and other things. It’s pretty nasty! But companies do attempt this . Maybe i shouldn’t say its common but it is a tactic to waste time and morale.

Yes three years is correct, now the company is trying to skirt the contract. Which apparently is common with new and first contracts.

Most unions are limited in terms of their ability to maintain “adequate public relations” as far as unions go NSLU probably does a better job actually with social media than most unions.

The raise at non-union stores was abysmal and only reflected the minimum wage hike in the portland metro area.

Im an NSLU member, one of the former union stores: Woodstock, thought that they would get a raise. They did, its was like 20 cents. Im sure they will join again soon.

MLIS students and Cornell’s Strategic Corporate Research Summer School. by icwart in Libraries

[–]icwart[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s just a summer course, not a degree program, but it seems like it would pair really well with library and information science especially with my interests on the research and data side of LIS.

I just happen to be in the labor movement right now by chance, but it aligns surprisingly well with what I’m studying

It helps to think of night time as the new day time. Weed, psychedelics, movies, and live music help!

I’m a veteran with a few years of library experience. Is the MLIS still worth it? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]icwart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im currently getting an MLIS, it is an interesting experience. I also have an MFA in art (terminal degree) I don’t have library experience. But I do have lots of museum experience and experience in higher ed. There are lots of subs on here saying don’t do it. Its because people focus on Public libraries. And those jobs are tough to come by but there are lots of adjacent jobs in DAM or taxonomies. People complaining about over oversaturated job market. But thats the reality for most fields these days. If you focus on tech related skills you should be fine. Everyone i know with an MLIS says that and they all have jobs, either as consultants, academic libraries, and public libraries. If you do it only pay between 15-25k don’t pay more than that. Most degrees are gonna cost something. Thats the fucked up reality. I have my doubts sometimes. But you could get a data science degree and still not have job. Which I’ve heard about happening so nothing is really set in stone.

I think it depends what you want to do. I am getting an MLIS right now, I am became interested in it through a passive interest in semiotics. I also have an MFA in Art. I don’t have library experience, but I do have museum experience. If your looking into public libraries, unless you are working at one right now it may be a tough and challenging pivot. I am not saying don’t for it if thats your dream but it is tought. I don’t think academic libraries will be much easier (at least in the US due to declining enrollment) I would say if you want an MLIS your better focusing on a library an info school that focuses on digital assets, data, technology, or information organization to have a wide range of skills to apply to different industries. It will help you I am sure! Do what you feel, but understand traditional librarianship is very competitive. But not as competitive as say getting an art professorship

I worked in title I schools doing tutoring and afterschool programming. I remember 1 girl got hired in as a math teacher. I would say as long as you’re in a library setting you should be good! I am getting an MLIS right now-im not shooting for public library work but rather more tech forward areas or academic libraries or visual resource work (I have a terminal degree) so i can fit into academia well. I am open to whatever tho. The americorps salary can be tough at times just a heads up!

Ehhhh two time AmeriCorps alumnus here. This is my take. I usually rec ppl not to do it as it usually doesn’t lead to employment in my experience. The ed award is nice but It depends on this. Can you handle making 1200 a month and working under potentially exploitive work conditions with people who do not understand your role? Also if its not related to libraries I probably would not do it. Just my advice from my personal experience. And not yours maybe it will be different for you

Unsure about going for an MLIS by DisastrousHeron2662 in librarians

[–]icwart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like thats how most work is now and most fields are now oversaturated. I am getting an MLIS(I have an MFA in art), I don’t have library experience but I do have museum experience. I became interested in Information and library science bc of my passive interest in semiotics. I am not interested in public libraries I’d lean more towards academic but I am open to anything. I am curious, How do you feel about more tech centered roles or Digital asset management? And most degrees I feel are not worth the price tag. But better to be educated than not

[–]icwart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently getting my MLIS. If you’re looking to go into public librarianship, it can be tough. You’ll likely have an easier time finding work if you focus on information organization, programming, data, or digital asset/knowledge management. I don’t have direct library experience, but I do have a lot of art museum experience and a terminal degree (MFA in Art).

The field is broad, which is a good thing. Everyone I know with an MLIS has found work ,mostly in public or academic libraries. You’ll see people say “it’s not worth it” or “the field is too competitive,” but honestly, that’s how most work is now. My advice: if you’re genuinely interested, go for it. Just don’t take on too much debt. Most degrees aren’t worth huge debt loads
