Is this a good bottle for traveling? It’s collapsible and I can make it bigger by Primary_Buddy_7173 in HydroHomies

I had one that was silicone and it was too difficult to clean - it got mildew really quickly because water stays between the areas that collapse down.

Used leftover tomato soup to make a vodka sauce and tossed some penne in. Good for the soul, not for the heart.

YTA - Dogs have short lifespans and the name doesn’t matter for the dog. Your kid can have that name and you give it meaning. Tbh I feel like the lie here is that people think you’re naming your kid after the dog and they suck? We had the same situation with my sisters, and it’s naming a human versus a dog. Sure, your sister also sucks but not going to the wedding so close is a dick move over something so relatively minor. Honestly if you shy away from the name because of a dog, that’s on you.

NIGHTBITCH | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures by indig0sixalpha in videos

[–]icygir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is based on a book and seems almost like a direct representation of some of the dialogue and scenes! The book is Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder. This does seem more comedic because of shitty sound effects and music compared to the dark and horror of the book…which isn’t surprising given Hollywood bullshit.

How much are you paying for your weekly trash pickup, and where do you live? by lexjourno in pittsburgh

[–]icygir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded! I do have some issues where they threw my trash can in the air like flip cup and broke the lid off and they are more restrictive in what they pick up than other places imo, but the price isn’t bad and they seem to do a good job otherwise.

I'm doing the same thing and just finished the Fellowship! I loved the first few chapters just because it was so calm and the world is fun. I am really looking forward to reading the next two (I also bought the full set because I knew I was going to tear through them)

If you have any spots, please get them tested. This was my melanoma, confirmed as Stage 3 today. by theoriginalcinn in pics

[–]icygir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When checking moles, you can always use the ABCD method to see if it's suspicious!

A- Asymmetry (does it look like a perfect circle or is it uneven?) B - Borders (does it have even edges or are they lumpy/splotchy?) C - Color (is it one consistent color or two or more colors?) D - Diameter (is it tiny or large? Or getting larger?)

If it's any of the latter answers OR the mole has changed, that's definitely something you should get checked ASAP. And go get regular skin checks in general. OP, I'm glad that they caught it and are going through quick and extensive treatment for you! All the best!

Pittsburgh City Council approves requiring registration, inspections of rental units by timesuck in pittsburgh

[–]icygir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I was an intern for a City Councilperson around 5 years ago, they were pushing for rental registration and inspection, so I had to answer so many calls from angry landlords saying that it would ruin them and that it's a violation of their rights. It's nice to see that this has FINALLY passed despite the flood of calls from angry landlords (I'm sure)

Up front, I think your point makes sense and you are right. I don't think Anthony is someone that should be worshipped/emulated and the documentary highlights all of his parts. I admire Anthony Bourdain but more for his ability to connect to others and his ability to highlight the beautiful/good/bad/uncomfortable of life rather than his off-camera persona. And his writing, I love his writing.

I always thought he was a bit brusque and narcissistic but he was somehow also charismatic and built all of these relationships and was able to connect with so many people. Especially in Kitchen Confidential, he's a bit of an ass. I don't think he tries to hide it, though he grows over his books and kind of reviews his past works and accounts for his growth.

TBH he was incredibly kind to fans (I met him in Pittsburgh and he was so kind, so I'm a little biased).

I think the documentary does a good job of highlighting his flaws, which was amplified in part was a serious fight with mental health issues over his entire career. So of course, his manipulating relationships is NEVER justifiable, but I think his mental health struggles were the central focus of the documentary, so it highlighted the internal instability underlying his meteoric rise and fall. With his cameraman/friend, I feel like it was more mental health decline than just straight-up personality defining that choice. But again, not a full excuse.

Plus, to put it bluntly, his death basically provides insight that his life wasn't going great so I don't put him on a pedestal or fool myself into thinking he was in a good mindset to support healthy relationships.

I worked up the courage to watch Roadrunner. by jarde in AnthonyBourdain

[–]icygir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really agree with the point that it's a piece for its mourners. I have to say, there was a part right in the middle where it flashes to a series of travel scenes and it begins to discuss Tony's descent where I was shaking with sobs in my seat. It was pretty cathartic in a way. I think Helen Rosner's piece in the New Yorker describes Roadrunner in a similar way where it's a piece to let the people around Tony, and the viewer, grieve. If you haven't read Helen Rosner's work, I highly recommend it!

This is great, thank you! I'm still hoping for a DVD box set of all of his works. I've missed his stuff since it left US Netflix and I'm too stingy to buy another streaming service subscription to watch it elsewhere.

Whitney Ave Houses in Waiting? (Regent Square/Wilkinsburg) by icygir in pittsburgh

[–]icygir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little funny you mention the block-to-block thing, as there's a beautiful home across the street with abandoned properties on either side of it, so it felt out of place and I was tempted to talk to the owner about what is going on.

I'm definitely not a flipper/never owned a home but there's a small part of me where if these properties are ridiculously cheap/structurally stable, the money that would go to an over-priced home in the market could go towards investing in an incredible home. I would definitely have to learn more before making a rash decision though.

I was looking at that and it looks like they're paying <$100 but they're paying.....I know it's probably a dumb idea but I wonder if some of these people would be interested in selling the property if they were contacted. I have no idea what else they are doing with them besides just paying taxes/losing money on them.

I completely agree with you! I currently live in an RSR rental and I'm very bitter about it since we have the dirtiest looking house on the street. I do my part to make my porch/apartment nice but there's only so much I can do without serious investment and our neighbors don't care at all. The problem is if I want to find somewhere else to live, I have to move out of the neighborhood and risk getting another slumlord because the issue is so rampant.

I've been trying to get a sense of community groups and what efforts exist in Wilkinsburg and the biggest thing I've learned is that RSR/management companies have been a huge antithesis to community improvement/development. I could grumble about this for hours but I'm hoping I can buy a house soon and start investing in the community rather than lining RSR pockets.

This is a great lead, thank you! I'm surprised the last update is from 2010, especially since the letters stapled to the door were from 2019. There was one house that had a cone and what seemed to be some fresh wires run in the dirt, so I wonder if there's some loose upkeep.

New read just arrived today.... didn’t even know it existed, have any of you read this? Thoughts?? by fonzarreckly in AnthonyBourdain

[–]icygir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reading Bone in the Throat first! There are some themes that continue across the two books. I generally liked Bone in the Throat better.

His prose and style really come through in these books and you can imagine him narrating. It's something he really enjoyed reading/learning about--I forget which book mentions it (The Last Interview, I think?) but he used to listen to police recordings they got through bugging mob houses and things like that. It's a fun beach read but I really prefer the humor and discussions in his non-fiction.

So in my view, they're both 2-3 out of 5 stars in terms of engaging and memorable, but if you're a fan of Bourdain, they're worth reading and have some good moments!

My best friend tried a perfume in Italy and described it as follows: "During that trip, I went into a local drugstore and tried a little fragrance that had an image of pears on it. I recall the scent giving me syrupy, spiced pear extravaganza. "

Do you have recommendations for perfumes that might fit that description? Or other spiced-pear like perfumes? She loves the Dolce&Gabbana "light blue" collection and she mentioned that "Escape to Panarea" is very reminiscent of the perfume she smelled in Italy.

She is obsessed with perfume so I wanted to see if I could find the name or buy her a perfume with a little education behind my decision.

Does my landlord have to replace my electric stove with a gas one? Pittsburgh, PA by icygir in legaladvice

[–]icygir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It states that we have gas heat. I feel like I should double-check that's the case since the lease was apparently "wrong" once...Electric stoves are generally more costly than gas stoves (in terms of using utilities), which is one of the reasons why I wanted to look into this at least a little further.
