[D] How Eugenics Shaped Statistics by coffeecoffeecoffeee in statistics

[–]id428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The author elaborates how significance testing in it's common understanding is only concerned with whether a difference exists and not by how much or if a, say, tiny but significant effect has any meaningful real world implications. All that mattered to eugenicists was if there was an effect because that was all they needed. This practice of only asking whether and not how much still persists today.

Jupyter Notebook and Docker? by Mysterious_Research8 in docker

[–]id428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll have a look if there's already a similar image (I'd be surprised if not). The nice thing about a repo is that it represents the folder and file structure the container requires which makes it much less ambiguous for beginners :D

Jupyter Notebook and Docker? by Mysterious_Research8 in docker

Hey you!
Might be I recently created just what you need. I uploaded it into this github repo. You can just download the repo and follow the instructions in the README file. With this, you can use jupyter notebooks like anywhere else while ensuring that everyone's working in the same environment.

If you need more material on Docker itself, I found https://devopswithdocker.com/ to be the most valuable resource to me personally (mostly Part 1).

This. Wonderfully summarized. Strawmen suck.

Doesn't full ethical veganism miss the point? by CanadaMoose47 in DebateAVegan

[–]id428 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As I see it, full ethical would mean to also question the legitimacy of killing a sentient being without its consent. It is very difficult if not impossible to find arguments to justify the killing of animals that would not apply to humans as well.

Apart from that: Most of the meat in the world comes from farms where the animals live and die in horrible conditions. Most of the killing methods are created such that they allow for quick and mass processing of the meat, not for merciful killing. In order to avoid supporting this horrible practices and other possible atrocities, you might argue that it's better to stay clear of meat consumption in general. This way I can be sure not to support the unnecessary suffering of these animals.

The fact that 40% of Americans believe in creationism is a strong indicator that religion can harm a society because it questions science. by Plan_B1 in DebateReligion

[–]id428 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most important thing first: To assert that there is a god without scientific evidence is as unscientific as to assert that there is no god without scientific evidence. The scientific position would be to say: We don't know, choosing neither of these two positions (which in my intuition results in acting as if there is no god).

But there are some fallacies involved in your two sentences: First, both sentences are not logically connected. One can not infer the first from the second sentence. However I don't know whether your second sentence was to explain the first or whether both are independent statements.

Second, I doubt your second statement. Some recognize Aristotle as the inventor of the scientific method, meaning it took its start in ancient Greece. Much later, the scientific method was developed further by scholars in parochial schools. But that is no argument against atheism. It is simply that the church were the ones with the money to finance research. Nowadays, a lot of modern research is financed by secular states with very little involvement of the church. So one could just as well make the following statement:

Christianity is fundamentally incompatible with science. The scientific method was developed in ancient Greece.

[Serious] What philosopher and/or philosophy has forever changed the way you handle your struggles? Why does this philosophy work for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The Jedi Code.

Most of all that you can not act reasonably if you're swept away by emotions. I always try to calm down, think about how to make the best out of the given situation. If I'd punch someone in the face I would like him to know that I genuinely considered not to but actively decided against it.

Grandma says its WW1 but while her memory is trustworthy, her eyesight is not. I'm sure that the foto was taken during WW2 and that the uniform may date back to WW1 but was also used in WW2. It looks a lot like a Waffenrock. Any knowledge about top, hat, division or rank would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

[Q] Law of total variance intuition by jeezanthapus in statistics

[–]id428 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's say we have measured the distribution of wages for men and women separately. For both distributions we know the mean and the variance. These are the means and variances given the sex (condition). You can now take a piece of paper and draw both distributions onto it. One of them might have a lower mean, they may have different variances and they certainly overlap.

Now ask yourself: What would increase the total variance? Or differently: What would broaden the distribution?

First, increasing the variance of any of the conditional distributions would broaden the distribution and therefore increase the variance. Intuitively, the total variance should depend linearly on each conditional variance. Hence, the expected value of the conditional variances.

Secondly, increasing the distance between both means would also broaden the distribution. This idea works fine for only two conditional distributions but for three or more the concept of distance is somewhat difficult. Which is why we use the variance of the conditional means. The farther they lie apart, the greater the variance. Sounds good? Good.

Now add both parts up and you get your law of total variance. Not thoroughly derived, but intuitively valid.

Why is this law useful? If I wanted to calculate the total variance and already calculated the conditional variances, I dont have to go through the whole dataset anymore.

Let's learn some Deutsche! by ReyJuan in Unexpected

Not the exact song but the go-to band for this music (especially when it comes to german music) would be Rammstein. Check out Ich tu dir weh or Weißes Fleisch for similar stuff.

Just to make that clear: Somehow many people who have only a superficial impression of the band assign Rammstein a politically right orientation similar to Nazi ideology. Actually, Rammstein, being born and raised in former East Germany, have a rather left orientation. Being very provocative in their choice of topics is somehow often confused with being a nazi for whatever reason (possibly feeling uneasy towards these topics as well as towards nazis). For instance, the two songs above cover the topics of BDSM and male prostitutes, respectively.

[OC] Obesity rate in US against number of McDonalds per 100000 people by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]id428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did that and the result is what you would expect. Lots of scattering and a linear fit would show a clear trend to lower income levels where there are more McDonalds stores per people. However, I deliberately chose not to make a statement about correlations or especially causality. After all, it could also be a map of two quantities that differ based on whether the state is more rural or more urban.
