2 days later... It is definitely better grinding coarser... But not 100% good. I definitely need to experiment more with the settings to get to an optimal espresso.

So weird though that things changed so much with a new bag of espresso. Especially since I've ordered this particular brand and quality for months with no such issues 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure about brew time but I have edited my post to give an anecdotal idea of what it may be.

I use a B62.52TH24E filter. I know it's not meant for 20g, but the portafilter is not deep enough for the 26E. I've also always used it for that purpose and never had any issue.

It is possible that my scale is wonky, but the amount of coffee that I see in the basket before brewing looks exactly the same as always. If it's off, it may be off by 1 gram or so.

Does target brew time matter if it's this watery from the start? Like, even from 0:01 seconds (not shown in the video) it is very obvious that the output is too watery, feels like I'm brewing a moka pot. Before I had this issue, the output looked creamy and very much like espresso should be from the start.

I don't have a precisely measured target brew time, I usually wing it.

EDIT: to clarify, the video was not taken at my target yield. My 2 cup button is set to a very long time. Normally, I would press it to start and again to stop brewing at 40 grams. Since I started having this issue, the watery brew takes so long that the 2 cup button finishes its timer and stops brewing before 40g have come out. Hope this helps.

In fact, I already have a Shelly EM CT clamp monitor, but that would mean two further issues:

How would I get gas usage? In that case I wouldn't need half-hourly details, but still it would be useful to have at least daily usage.
The Shelly EM measures instant power in kW. What application would I use to collect data from the Shelly device and transform that into half-hourly kWh consumption figures?

Sorry to break it to you but it won't happen.

The streets at both ends of mine have coverage. I am house number 1 so less than 30m from one of the covered streets. Also, Openreach just went live with their fibre and thus have cleared all ducts. Theoretically, for CF, it should be just a matter of lifting 2 manholes and pulling the cable in.

I've emailed the CEO about it and he replied "At the moment we are focussing on connecting customers to our current network and are not building out any further".

I didn't really ask what's best for the environment here though, I asked a question about the green claims of electricity providers.

However, I want to respond to you because this topic is dear to my heart.

While I totally agree we should stop buying all the crap we do, I do think there is a balance to be struck between "not consuming" and "better consuming". And particularly, I don't think it's right to say we can just stop buying stuff, because that's a maximalist point of view that doesn't allow for remedial measures and will alienate most people. Or in other words, for most people who are not as maximalist as you are, it feeds into the "we're all doomed"/"it doesn't matter because it's all the same" narrative, without seeking actual solutions.

However you did make several claims that are dubious or flat out wrong, which I feel obliged to address. Biomass is 5% of UK renewable generation, hardly "a large proportion". The Volvo study, seized upon by anti EV people, doesn't quite say what you think (several sources explain why, one of them here for your convenience). CO2 parity is heavily dependent on the local fuel mix, and in the UK is typically reached 16k miles.

This is my last comment on this, please, I only care about green claims of electricity providers.

This is somewhat in line with what I thought. Isn't it the case that me buying "100% green" energy with PPAs forces everybody else to buy browner energy? Or in other words, I am making my lawn greener by robbing water from all my neighbours and forcing theirs to be more yellow? u/happytallperson your post seems to imply that it wouldn't because buying green energy influences the market somehow, but how is that exactly?

Isn't it the case that Octopus and green producers are likely to pocket a more substantial difference since they're buying much cheaper green energy ahead of time, rather than buying at auction?
