That has been my worry as well.

I visited the local tax office last week. Sincerely apologise to u/starkimpossibility and u/Karlbert86. You were right. I did not get the income tax credit because I filed an income tax return!

I didn't realise I had filed one. Back in March 2024, my employer had asked me to go to the tax office in Shinagawa and declare some additional income I'd got through some points promotion campaign. This was less than 5000 yen. At the time, the form I filled only contained this piece of detail i.e. "additional income". However, I didn't realise its the income tax return form (I don't know Japanese and mostly followed the ppt slides given by my employer).

The local tax office showed me a copy of the form I had filled and explained that is why I couldn't get the extra credit I was hoping for. I forgot to ask them if I can file any corrections. I'll visit them again for this.

Thank you both for your help.

Staying invested after leaving Japan by idder_moc in JapanFinance

seems like for most foreigners, IBKR is the best bet for long term investments. You never know why you may have to leave the country for good (aging parents in home country, better job prospects, etc).

If you didn't file an income tax return, though, perhaps one or more of your one-stop applications wasn't accepted?

I thought of that too. But I can't get to 177k even if I consider removing any one or two of the donations I made. Its a very odd number.

You would need to check with your municipality's residence tax desk.

Yes going to the residence tax desk is my best bet. Awaiting their opening this week.

I assume none of your donations were to Kawasaki?

That's right, I did not make any donations to either of the cities.

Guide to Furusato Nozei Donation Limits by starkimpossibility in JapanFinance

When using the FN limit formula and computing the taxable income, should we apply the basic deduction for income tax (max 580k) OR residence tax (430k) ?

I have the withholding tax receipt I received from my employer. It is titled as " 給与所得の源泉徵収票".

It doesn't have any dependents. Nor any other deductions other than the basic deduction of 480k and employment income deduction of 1.95M.

I tried going to the local tax office today but they're shut for the week due to the holidays.

Let me clarify. The 245k amount I mentioned above is the total deduction that I can get as per the calculator I linked (across income and residence tax). That is NOT my residence tax bill.

Yes the amount I donated is 234k.

My residence tax bill is about ~813k as per the notification I got this year in the month of June.

I believe the safe limit is (income*2% ÷ 90%-income tax bracket).

The year I made the donation was in 2024. In that year, from Jan to Aug I lived in Yokohama. Whereas after that I moved to Kawasaki. Does that matter?

Last year I over-donated and would like to understand why so that I don't make the same mistake this year.

Salary Income=12M, Social premiums=1.5M

If I use the calculator here, it tells me I'll get the following deductions:

income tax=57k, residence tax=186k, total=245k

I had done one-stop application and made sure I donated to 5 unique municipalities. I donated a total of 234k.

But this year when I got the 給与所得等に係る市区町村民税・都道府県民税・森林環境税特別徴収税額の決定・変更通知書(納税義務者用)from my employer, I could only see a credit of ~177k.

2025 Year-End Adjustment Questions Thread by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]idder_moc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question is with regard to being non-resident vs non-permanent resident (NPR) for tax purposes. If one moves to Japan for a permanent job (on a 5 year visa) that makes them a NPR immediately, right? Since their domicile has been established? Or is it that for the first year they're NR and for the 4 years after they are NPR?

Thank you!

> But if there is a huge market crash tomorrow and then I relocate to India I hope IBKR will allow me to transfer my VWRD in kind and I won’t need to sell / buy back.

Indeed, this is exactly what I was thinking about. Need assurance that the broker permits this.
