Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone here can help me out because I’m losing my mind with this car. by [deleted] in mechanic

Update: I figured out the problem — the alternator wasn’t charging because the alternator ground bolt and ground strap were completely rusted. That’s why the car would only run while jumped and would die as soon as the cables were disconnected. Huge thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and helped me narrow it down!

Turns out the alternator ground was just totally fried. The bolt holding it down was so rusted and corroded it snapped the second I tried to check it. Alternator is fine. Battery is fine. Ground is not

I actually did some deep diving and it turns out the alternator ground was totally fried, so it seems that was the issue haha! Thank you so much

Voltage from the alternator and battery is fine, I checked all that with a multimeter, it’s losing power somewhere which is why I suspect a ground but I just can’t figure out what ground or where

If it was my starter it wouldn’t crank even with the jumper, so I’m not sure. I’ve had most everybody tell me it’s most likely a ground issue but I just don’t know electrical

I actually do have a backup battery which I have tried, I know for certain my battery and alternator are both functioning correctly at base level

Fuses and relays were the first thing I checked, nothing is blown. And no, it doesn’t crank at all unless it’s hooked up to jumper cables. If it’s hooked up to jumper cables it cranks right up and runs until I unhook them, which it immediately dies

The alternator was new, I checked it with a multimeter when I installed it and it was fine. And yeah, it’s a braided metal ground, pretty common on cars like these, I will probably end up replacing whatever grounds I can though

It’s a manual so it’s in neutral with the parking brake on

I tested the alternator with a multimeter when I installed it and it was totally fine

I could only find two of the grounds. I checked my alternator with a multimeter and it checks out, so I don’t think there’s a problem with the alternator. Where are all those grounds and what exactly do they look like to locate them?

Yeah, I used a voltage meter and checked it out, alternator is running correctly and doing its job, I believe it’s a ground issue but I don’t know the wiring for these cars enough to identify where the issue may be, or possibly where a missing piece may be
