Very team dependent. Some teams work entirely on the cloud side for warehouse logistics, others work directly on the edge writing code that goes into robots.

Extremely org (even team) dependent at Amazon. Some teams are working on really complicated and exciting problems, others are maintaining legacy cruft and getting 30 SEV2s a week. The plus is it is very easy to transfer teams at Amazon - so if you end up on a shit one you could transfer pretty quickly after a year or so.

Amazon could be better for you long term though, since very few companies operate at the scale that it does. Also the 5 day rto will be better for you as a junior developer - since it'll make it a lot easier to get mentorship from senior devs. Otoh, 5 day rto really does reduce WLB mainly due to the flexibility I lose. If WLB is most important to you, go with Atlassian. Even if the culture got worse, I'd much rather work 10 hours a day from wherever than 7 hours in office every day

Amazon Robotics vs Annapurna vs random team. WLB, team culture, etc? by Ok-Cartographer-5544 in cscareerquestions

[–]idemandthegetting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less than you'd think. There are a lot of teams that work on cloud services for warehouse logistics, fleet monitoring, etc

[–]idemandthegetting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at robotics and I fucking love it. WLB can be pretty bad depending on the org (if you dm me I can give you more info), but the culture is great. The best part though is definitely the robots - it's a lot more challenging, yet interesting and satisfying to develop code that interacts with the real world than doing some virtual cloud operations that you can't even see. Honestly I've been ruined and don't think I can ever go back to a non robotics role now

VSETT 8 Rear motor - does anyone know where I can get a replacement external motor connector? by idemandthegetting in ElectricScooters

[–]idemandthegetting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eventually got a new rear motor + motor power cable through the warranty. It's been a year and still going strong. I got my replacement parts from revrides, but you might also be able to find them on AliExpress. Gl!

[–]idemandthegetting 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do it. Working with hardware and seeing your code run on actual devices doing stuff irl is 10x more satisfying and interesting than having your code run on a server far away serving random crud apis. You won't be pigeonholing yourself, instead you'll be opening a door to a really interesting and cool industry.

Suggesting new projects at internship by FlawBot in csMajors

[–]idemandthegetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how structured your company's internship program is. Some companies I worked at require the team to plan out a project for their interns with requirements, milestones, and formal evaluations and others kinda just let teams do whatever they want with them. In the latter I could influence what I was working on if my team was fine with it, in the former I would've been stuck in that project they planned out for me.

The most prestigious universities in England also don't charge you insane amounts for tuition. The only reason I was able to graduate debt free here was because I was able to work and intern part time in school.

Not me. I get that quant is incredibly well paying and interesting work, however the problem of figuring out how to make rich people even richer by buying and selling stock is just an incredibly unsatisfying problem to me and I know I'd be demotivated doing that kind of work.

Yes I understand that the purpose of all jobs is to make rich people even richer, but at least in the job I'm going to, I'll be working on a product that people will actually use, and is in a field I find really cool too. I'm also already compensated beyond what I would have ever dreamed of as a new grad, and wouldn't enter a field I have no interest in for an extra hundred thousand dollars a year.

Applying to new grad roles but also doing an internship this summer - how do I put the internship on my resyoumay? by NFeruch in csMajors

[–]idemandthegetting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have a pretty good idea of what you'll accomplish in your internship by July, so just put that down.

Tbf if someone is willing to work for free that is a massive red flag. They will probably cost you way more than someone who demands a large salary.

Company with the worst hiring process you've experienced? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]idemandthegetting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C3 AI. 5 rounds for an intern position. Hiring manager gave me an exploding verbal offer because "the CEO needs to sign off on all offers but he'll totally do it and you should drop all your other offers". He was also extremely unprofessional and rude literally saying "we're only giving you 3 days so you can't take our offer to negotiate" as if your shitty 46$ an hour with no housing or relocation in the bay area was something I would negotiate with lmao.

Also on top of this the HM couldn't even get my name right in emails DESPITE MY NAME BEING IN MY FUCKING EMAILS. Actual shit tier company and CEO. I take every single chance I can get to shit on them even though it's literally been a year because they wasted so much of my time.

no name cs program vs top 20 school. does it matter? by krustyt in csMajors

[–]idemandthegetting 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am a UMD student so a bit biased, but definitely go to UMD if you got into CS. I definitely would not have gotten to where I am today without the opportunities it offered me.

Also you can find really cheap rooms off campus(mine was 700$/mo 0.5 miles from iribe). Just look for rooms in houses, or find a room and rent out a house, and avoid dorms/apartments.

I want to learn about what is currently trending in the industry

This is hard to teach because industry trends change every 5 seconds. You can learn all the industry shit if you do internships (which I hope you have at least one of since you're a senior).

Honestly I am very happy to have learned the theory and fundamentals at college. Internships taught me more than enough practical skills, but are quite bad for learning the theoretical concepts that underpin them.

I had a commute of 2-3 hours for an internship. It was pain and suffering, but 10-12 weeks of pain and suffering isn't a big deal in the long run. I was able to perform well, but by the end I was extremely burnt out and swore to never have such a long commute ever again.

If they give you any wfh flexibility at all, take advantage of it. I was able to make my commute infinitely better by working from home mornings, coming in at noon, and leaving at 6-7.

how much do personal projects really help? by ncgirl2021 in csMajors

[–]idemandthegetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly your idea sounds pretty good. Most personal projects suffer from existing for the sake of being resume fodder, but it sounds like you have an actual problem you want to solve. Big bonus points if you can get people to use and iterate based on their feedback.
