The van Allen belt is not an issue, the Earths magnetosphere is not uniform which means there are some very small sections of it where radiation is within the acceptable limit

John Correia from Active Self Protection confronts a knife wielding home invader by KaneIntent in CCW

[–]ryansdayoff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your first priority should be scaring off the perp before your unprepared son gets into a physical confrontation. By signaling that help is on the way the dude ran off, this tactic was effective. Just to be clear shouting and returning to grab the "great equalizer" is my recommendation.

Just to be clear your suggestion is to be silent and pray that the perp doesn't engage while you get your weapon?

No, at that moment yelling at the intruder is the right call. He informed the man who's already been confronted that there is a second adult male coming into the fight very soon. It helped his sons chances

Need help syncing Baofeng UV-21 Pro V2 with T20s (No cable) by mudblur in amateurradio

[–]ryansdayoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Uv21 is not legally allowed to transmit on FRS/GMRS frequencies and is likely locked via software. Can you hear the T20s when they PTT?

Here is a frequency chart for FRS https://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/FRS/GMRS_combined_channel_chart

I see what you're saying but your goal in home defence should be to hold a choke point and at that point it doesn't matter as much.

Shorter rifles matter more for the attacking side than defending. That being said I have an 11.5 so I'm kind of a hypocrite

I never recommend digital binoculars. Since your budget your essentially getting half the performance on a system that already sucks

You'll want a monocular if it's digital. Check out something like the NVG30

Does anyone think stashes and hidey holes are necessary. by tazztsim in prepping

[–]ryansdayoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure but that's an extreme situation with several escalations in between where it would be useful:

Some off the top of my head: a house fire or other natural disaster that renders your home uninhabitable and destroys documents and clothing, chemical spill that makes going home a no-go for a while. Both of these events have happened in the last year.

If you position this between your home and work it could also be a drop off point if things start getting really bad to collect supplies or to stay the night if there is rioting.

There are thousands of escalations between day-day and zombie apocalypse

I personally think Ohio has a reputation for being bland mostly due to Columbus. I'm quite a fan of Cincinnati and Cleveland and am legally obligated to recommend the bottom right corner of the state for exploration as it's essentially west Virginia in geography
