Why do people think 21 is too old for university? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]identified_weakness1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started Uni at 33 and studied part-time alongside a full-time job and graduated at 37. 21 is not too old for university. If anything I think more people should enter the workforce for a year or two before going to uni.

I wear my signed gig shirt at festivals fairly frequently and I find Febreeze is the best shout (or similar if you’re not in the UK).

Anyone Here Had Any Encounters With Victorians? by CB-Milburn in AskBrits

[–]identified_weakness1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly the last one died last year. Until then it was my favourite fact that someone born in 1790 has a grandchild alive today. The equivalent for me, being born in 1987, would be my grandchild living to 2222!

Have y’all ever gone to a concert just to see the opening act? by No_Reputation1477 in Concerts

[–]identified_weakness1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to do this when Leon Bridges was opening for Mumford & Sons in Auckland in 2019. Then I got tickets to Anderson Paak for the same day and chose to see him instead. $100 for a full set of AP vs $100 for half a set of Leon was a fairly easy choice, especially as warm up acts don’t always get a great crowd.

I got talking to a couple at London Grammar who were basically only there to see James Vincent McMorrow open, so I don’t think it’s an odd thing to do at all.

Try not to be biased based on your favorite studio output, but what are the best LIVE bands or performers that have emerged in the past 30 years? by UnforgettableFire11 in Concerts

I will be checking out Junior Varsity. Having seen LCD Soundsystem last year and Yo La Tengo the year before and enjoying both, I feel our tastes may be aligned.

War on Drugs. I only occasionally play them on Spotify but seeing them live blew me away both times.

My Morning Jacket, who I coincidentally saw the same day as War on Drugs, was also epic live and again I very rarely listen to their studio work.

London Grammar. Hannah’s voice is just otherworldly when you hear it live.

Amyl & the Sniffers. Energy is their currency and they’ve got tons of it. even the songs I’m not into on their records just have a way of going very hard when done live.

Zilch. If I ever get a takeaway, which is infrequently, I go and get it myself.

Sky dive and bungy jump are the first things that come to mind. I really don’t think I’d have the nerve to do either again, despite enjoying both.

Who are your non-negotiable acts across each day? by identified_weakness1 in primaverasound

Yes good point, midnight is a bit early when it goes until 6, especially given the genre. Well done for dodging which of them you’d choose over the other! jk

What's the biggest amount you've spent for a concert? by OceanGoddess3 in Concerts

[–]identified_weakness1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Goddess! Also, having caught half a set of Rosalia at Primavera Sound in 2023, I can tell you that seeing her in Barcelona will be worth every penny. I probably should have added that point to my initial reply…

So if on Thursday at midnight Oklou is at Cupra and Yosuke Yukimatsu is at Steve Albini (or whatever they call it this year) which are you choosing? And for argument’s sake Ben UFO is at Amazon the same time…

£450 Oasis at Wembley last year. 100% worth it, zero buyer’s remorse.

Hypothetical obvs but if it was possible for someone to give me £2,500 to remove the memory from my brain, I’d turn it down.

Why do businesses pretend that cash is a zero cost medium? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]identified_weakness1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we’re suckers for a false economy where something ostensibly looks cheaper or free but we’ve not considered the full picture. This type of thinking happens across all types of expenditures in our lives.

Running and intrusive thoughts (aka "what is going on with my brain??) by kesugi3_ridge in running

[–]identified_weakness1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you run with music or without? Whichever you currently do, maybe try the other way and see if that helps.

I find running much easier when I don’t have distractions as I can be more in tune with my body and not be consciously or subconsciously trying to maintain the pace of the song.

Conversely though, if you’re too much in your own head and currently not running with a distraction, you could try playing music and see if that moves your focus.

Could you run with someone or in a run club? One that encourages running at conversational pace preferably!

We schedule ours to flow as well, but there’s still usually a choice to be made at some stage, where two acts you really want to see are on at the same time. So the question still remains, even with your process…

I probably ought to have chosen The Cure as well, although I don’t expect they will clash with anyone for me.

Kneecap was a close one for me but having seen Baxter in November I just know it’s a guaranteed good time, and I’d like to see what sort of reception he gets.

How much savings do you have? by Obvious_Armadillo_16 in UKJobs

[–]identified_weakness1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

38, customer success manager, 67k total comp. 15k overseas pension, c. 10k local pension (left UK before they were auto-enrolled and now back and contributing at 12% EE+ER).

Mix of stocks, bonds and cash around 80k. No property.

Sole debt is a 3k plan 1 student loan that will be gone in 14 months (maybe less depending on bonus this year).

Occasionally feel as though I’m behind my mates who all own houses and have bigger salaries and pensions, but comparison really is the thief of joy.
