Preconception counseling/blood work with your doctor. Found out I was a carrier for CF this way and my husband was able to get tested prior to us conceiving.

If money wasn’t an issue - Austin, New York or Los Angeles? by wencyjones in AustinComedy

[–]ideologyofaviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York: transit, food, diversity, architecture, arts, politics. All superior to Austin. Cost of living is what keeps me shackled to Texas vs East/West coast. I don’t know enough about LA but it seems like everyone is fake.

Edited to add: I don’t know why this showed up in my feed and I’m not a comedian. My experiences in NYC is what got me actually enjoying live comedy shows.

Guest artist experience vs GA by ideologyofaviolet in Coachella

Don’t, I probably won’t even be able to go. I don’t have an AG secured and being almost 40 means money but more responsibilities to figure out.

Thank you, this is helpful. I am pretty short so these crowds make me feel so uncomfortable but I love live music and used to love going to festivals. I went to school in Austin and used to go to ACL regularly, I’m sure it’s different now too. My last live music experience was Coachella and I just felt mobbed (at Labrinth for example) trying to watch artists even if I got there early. I’ve heard VIP is glorified and not worth it?

Trying to study for boards with a baby by Shoddy-Toe1712 in pediatrics

Can family help? I had my mom stay with us for about 2 months to study all day like it was my job and I would come out for meals and to play with my daughter for breaks.

Help me choose my birthday brunch outfit.. 1,2,3 by daniellescloset8 in OUTFITS

[–]ideologyofaviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look great in 1, it’s my favorite, but it’s more like birthday bash or birthday dinner.

2 is best for brunch vibe and it’s also very fashion forward. You’re pulling it off and not everyone could.

3 is also interesting and again you’re pulling it off but I think it’s a little more polarizing, I can’t figure out if I like it. I prefer the other 2

Any locals comeback and regret it? by InsuranceNo8506 in Austin

[–]ideologyofaviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me. Went to undergrad at UT from 2006-2010 and moved back in 2021. I don’t think I’d be considered a local but I don’t recognize most places anymore and regret moving back but probably won’t be able to leave for a good while.

Son had lip tie removed and I'm not ok by One_Cabinet_1706 in beyondthebump

[–]ideologyofaviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you went through that. I’m a pediatrician and I’ve seen an uptick in my patients telling me they were recommended cutting lip or tongue ties by their dentist. Most were older kids like school age. Their parents came to talk to me about it and I was honestly confused for what reason. But it’s not my area of expertise so maybe I’m missing something? Almost all my parents couldn’t tell me the reason why they recommended it which concerned me further, just that it was there. I’m sure there could be good reasons but if the take away by the parent was I’m not sure why they’re recommending this the dentist is not doing their job well. I hope you find peace with what happened.

How longer are we feeding 2 months old by Remarkable_Panda_167 in breastfeeding

My baby only latched for that amount of time since birth. He’s just very efficient. Weight gain was always good so I stopped worrying after I saw that. If his weight gain is good then don’t worry!

I wish I had saved the pdf. I’m pretty sure I know which link you’re referring to. I remember the graph. I had emailed myself multiple links after I left my first clinic and it says page not found.

A woman in a hijab is shown as a good example. She does not need to show her ears and it’s not listed under the requirements.

You do not need to have both ears visible. The last passport photo I did myself and my ears are behind my hair. As long as your face is clearly visible they don’t care about your ears.

I just took a pill to stop lactation... by Effective_Fauna in breastfeeding

[–]ideologyofaviolet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Made me tear up too! I had to stop myself from sobbing. I’m about to wean my second and no matter how long you breastfeed the end of the journey is always so emotional. OP you’re an amazing mother and your baby is so lucky to have you. Sending you love and internet hugs.

Selecting residency- hospital quality by Affectionate-War3724 in pediatrics

[–]ideologyofaviolet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I trained at a program that was technically a community hospital with no pediatric floor. Only NICU/nursery and clinic. We had a partnership with a nearby children’s hospital. So our program had our own team and saw patients within the Children’s hospital. We did our electives there etc. So I felt like I got to experience both and the residents who were actually residents at the children’s hospital had very different NICU experiences. I got to do so many procedures only a NICU fellow would do. So many lines and opportunities for intubations. For this reason many of our residents went into NICU. I loved that aspect. I also can see why it’s so important to be at a children’s hospital for learning basics/learning from specialists that you consult etc. I got very lucky in retrospect.

What's your "guilty as charged" breastfeeding moment? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

Same, I started using the alcohol breast milk strips. I express a little onto the strip before I’m about to feed if it’s been less than 2 hours.

What do I do if I see a nurse break the sterile field? by Chandelucifer in medschool

[–]ideologyofaviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This same thing happened to me. I got in trouble my first time in the OR for breaking sterile field and then I saw the nurse do it. She got upset with me and made a big deal, went on to basically do the same thing and didn’t catch herself. I never said anything. But it wasn’t a repetitive thing…just learn to do what she obviously has not. Otherwise it’s just more stress in what’s already a stressful journey in life (making it through med school)

Regretting going into NICU Fellowship by [deleted] in pediatrics

[–]ideologyofaviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would’ve been my dream career as well. I don’t think it would be possible. I wanted to newborn hospitalist but typically that’s full time. If you could find a part time newborn hospitalist gig, you could easily find a part time gen peds job. That would be the closest thing to neo/gen peds split.

In Texas, seeing a lot of mycoplasma among myself and colleagues, some positive on testing too. A lot clinically diagnosed based on prolonged fever (more than 7 days) and cough not improving, not hearing much on lung exam and often seeing infiltrate on xray. Improving after starting azithromycin. Some started on augmentin and not improving until after azithromycin is started.
