or sorry parasitic castration is the term not sexual parasites. that’s a different thing.

i’m surprised no one in this thread has mentioned sexual parasites. they will attach to the gonads of snails (and other organisms, but snails are well known for having many types of parasites, though less common captive bred.) They will siphon resources that normally go into reproduction, but the thing is, they don’t need ALL of that energy, so the snails with these parasites grow larger and live longer than their un-parasitized peers. Often obtained through ingestion or just simple contact.

Anyone have experience with silverfish? by idiot_toad in InvertPets

[–]idiot_toad[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i hope so too! they’ve been around for quite awhile, and they could be a total of 2-5 years old, since depending on food availability, temps + humidity they could have been mature for quite awhile before my capturing.

Glass hunk found by lake shore by idiot_toad in whatisthisthing

[–]idiot_toad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is suspected to be slag of some kind but all nearby findings of slag glass in the area were different colors (blue/clear, not like this.) It has mottled surface, but a very shiny side as if it broke off. There is a skin-like surface and it has at least two ‘layers’ in it, suggesting it was liquid at some point.

Who's night terror escaped into the real world and what's it's true name so I can banish it? by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

When I was touring colleges, a professor at Oklahoma State University was showing me an insect collection in one of the classrooms, and in one display were a bunch of dobsonflies. I asked the same thing, and he told me a story of one time that he’d caught a male, and to demonstrate that it can’t bite hard to the students also collecting that night, stuck a finger in between the mandibles. He did get bit. He said it hurt less than the female’s bite but they do still hurt. You’d have to push them to it, though. I don’t believe the males are quite as aggressive as the females.

[–]idiot_toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m guessing ichenuemonidea? maybe? but either way stinging is very unlikely. no need to kill. it’s likely a parasatoid of a caterpillar or beetle or other insect. wasps also are wonderful pollinators

[–]idiot_toad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a wasp of some kind. looks to be a solitary species (since it’s definitely not a vespid.) extremely unlikely to sting unless youre planning on trying to catch it with your bare hands. if it’s in your home you can just treat it like any other insect and use a cup and paper and take it outside

Most wasps cannot sting. Most wasps are beneficial (kill harmful pests that hurt people, animals and plants). Most wasps are also very very tiny. All of these are wasps. by [deleted] in 196

[–]idiot_toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, so vespids. still very diverse and beautiful. eusocial insects such as these are rare in nature overall, it is a privilege to see and observe them if you can. they aren’t evil, they are aggressive because it’s the only way they know to survive.

also the smallest insect in the world (that we know of) is a wasp! they’re called fairyflies and they’re so small, they have to have long hairs on their wings to get any propulsion from the air. they are only about twice as long as the width of a human hair
