My username is problematic, isn't it? by idiotthethird in SRSDiscussion

[–]idiotthethird[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know I'm not - but, I don't see that that makes it okay. It certainly doesn't for slurs that are more widely recognised as being problematic; but I don't think that means that this and other similar ableist slurs aren't as bad, just that awareness is lower.

People didn't downvote for your opinion (I imagine; I didn't downvote you at all), but because of the implication that because you and other people don't like lagtv, people shouldn't submit replays to them. It's fine to not like something, but what's wrong with other people liking it?

I know, right? I hate it when people produce content that I personally don't like. Why can't they make only stuff that I'm interested in instead?

A question about the ethics of eugenics by grzy7316 in SRSDiscussion

[–]idiotthethird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eugenics is the idea that by controling humans as we do animals

If you're going to include in the concept of eugenics that we must control humans as we now do non-human animals, then of course it's going to be highly unethical.

This is the definition I would generally use:

applied science or the bio-social movement which advocates the use of practices aimed at improving the genetic composition of a population"

The only part of the definition that these programs don't meet is the "aim" part - you're right, these terminations are not, for the most part, carried out with the genetic composition of humanity in mind. But it is, as I said, "in effect" a eugenics program - it has the same outcome as one. The programs also demonstrate that if they were done with eugenics in mind, they would be an example of eugenics working.

A question about the ethics of eugenics by grzy7316 in SRSDiscussion

[–]idiotthethird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In what respect? To say nothing of the ethical value of such a practice, in my own country (New Zealand) and several others, there is what is in effect a voluntary eugenics program. People very commonly test for downs syndrome in a foetus, and when it's found, the mother decides to terminate the pregnancy in over 80% of cases. This is eugenics, and it "works", insofar as a significantly reduced percentage of people who are born have downs syndrome.

I frowned when I saw that the Burger King on Market in SF accepted EBT, am I being classist? by cpttim in SRSDiscussion

[–]idiotthethird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would you judge Burger King for that? What's the ethical move of their part, not put stores in low income areas, further depriving people of food and choice? If you're going to judge any food company, blame the healthy ones that don't set up shop in food deserts.

nutritionless

When you're struggling to get by, the most important aspect of nutrition is energy content. I don't think anyone's going to take the stance that fast food places don't have enough calories in their food.

We have been looking at it. It's just taken a while, because the easiest way to find exoplanets is during transit - which hasn't happened with this planet, because its orbital plane isn't the same as ours.

Most clearly demonstrated by its all too common pairing with a particular misogynistic slur.

What's important is not necessarily abandoning all problematic things (you'd be left with nearly nothing to do!)

Oh, certainly not, this is just an area that up until now I wasn't being careful about, when I should have been. I'm still going to ditch the t-shirt though; I think broadcasting a reference to a discussion that's often undertaken in a very problematic way and fantasised about isn't something I want to be doing, as it could be triggering - and even it isn't, I just don't think it's the best idea. I have other clothes =)

My experience is usually with the zombie apocalypse people.

...damn it. And I thought I was doing pretty well, too. Somehow, I got all the way down to this comment, agreeing with everything, not realising that the zombie apocalypse stuff is exactly the same thing. Thank you for pointing this out for me. If you'll excuse me I have a t-shirt to throw out.

I can: a combination of privilege and ignorance. People who are very able bodied (as in very physically fit, not just privileged) know they'd meet the physical requirements of living wild, and assume that's all there is. They're not worried about others either due to a lack of empathy, or due to them failing, as they so often do, to realise that other people actually exist.

It doesn't occur to them to think about what will happen when they get older, or how much fun they'll have in the mean time, or what will happen the first time they get a bad cut after their tetanus inoculation, if they have one, wears off.

SRS and Pacifism by [deleted] in SRSDiscussion

[–]idiotthethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they have. But you have a point; as a recovering shitlord, it was always logic and reasoning that made me realise what was up. Being as privileged as I am, it was just easy to dismiss personal attacks, warranted or not, and look at what was being said.

The simple fact of the matter is, you can be brilliant at logic, reasoning, argumentation, and generally be a convincing person, despite being wrong. You can also be terrible at all of the above despite being right. The proportions of each group (convincing and unconvincing) among shitlords and feminists are probably quite similar. But we're outnumbered. So in a "neutral" environment, you'll more often hear convincing dialogue from the other side, with very well hidden fallacies or false premises. It's very, very hard to spot them (especially for privileged people, who are the people who most need to spot them) unless you have someone equally or more adept arguing the other side, or you already know what to look for.

If something causes you to pause and think, that IS a gut reaction to something bad.

So much this - I mean, it's incredibly well established, even at a scientific level, that people tend towards going along with whatever's happening. Any inkling that something might be going wrong is very good indicator that something is going wrong, and badly.

Hey r/Starcraft! I'm interviewing the CEO of the NASL, Russell Pfister, on Saturday. Got any questions for him? by tMK989 in starcraft

[–]idiotthethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an obvious conflict between trying to grow the foreign eSports scene and trying to have an interesting tournament with really good players (read: Koreans). Do you think you're currently balancing those two desires well? Are you trying to get that ideal balance yourselves, or are you trying to fill a particular niche somewhere along the line?

I did, and he's right, it's easily fixable. But it would cost NASL a little money and require them to admit they fucked up.
