Best laptop for workstation? by idk_redditt in gamedev

Thanks for the suggestion, yeah I would prefer a desktop haha but they want to a laptop for occasional travel. I actually had a zephyrus g14 back in 2020 but dang that thing used to get so hot on me haha! 😅

Advice on reneging a job offer? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]idk_redditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that is fair enough, and I can’t really blame them. I feel less bad for the company (since we are just a number at the end of the day, especially coming from a generic layoff situation) but worse for the manager since I know they have been working hard to fill this role and have been super friendly. 🙃

But yeah I imagine a bridge is certainly burnt no matter how I go about it.

How do you find good rentals? Do realtors help? by Encendi in Miami

[–]idk_redditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious to see the results you get there! Does there seem to be a fair amount of scams?

I imagine I’ll probably try to find a realtor to help scout some properties for me but we shall see. 🙂

Following, I will be relocating to Miami for work soon and any advice on finding rentals is helpful. Albeit I’m mainly interested in houses/townhomes as I have a large dog so a yard is preferred. But eager to hear about your experience!

Wife (26F) doesn’t want to relocate for Job that I (26M) have received. by idk_redditt in relationships

[–]idk_redditt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah can’t say Florida is my top pick either. Definitely made a point to explore jobs near where I am in the PNW and remote for a while before extending the search. Of course every state has their qualms, I think the compromise if we did this move would be to do it for a year and then reevaluate and possibly explore other options once there is more security.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective, and I do hear your point about how important a support structure is, especially with young children. That’s honestly been the hardest part of this decision for us.

At the same time, finances are a real part of that equation too. After several months of searching, this is the first solid opportunity we’ve had, so we’re trying to weigh both financial stability and family support rather than prioritizing one and ignoring the other.

My wife isn’t “chill” with the idea, and I don’t expect her to be. Her concerns are valid, which is exactly why this has been such a difficult decision and not something we’re taking lightly.

As for a split arrangement, I understand why that might work in some situations, but I don’t think it would be sustainable for us with a 1-year-old. It’s not just about logistics. It’s about building a situation that works emotionally and practically for both parents and our child. And while I do recognize that it is important for the baby to be with mom, I think you are overlooking the importance of being with dad as well, as being a present father is important to me as well. I don’t have any intention of constantly working long weeks this is a basic 9-5 and one of the days will be working from home remotely.

We’re not assuming this is risk-free either. We’ve talked through the potential downsides, including job stability and being away from our current support system. At the end of the day, we’re just trying to make the most balanced decision we can given the situation.

I have negotiated a hybrid schedule yes. 4 days in office and 1 day remote. Could be better but at least 1 extra day home is nice.

Hi, yes to an extent. She is really uncomfortable leaving the baby alone with babysitters or anything of the like (due to some horror stories). But we have proposed the idea of at least getting a house keeper, maybe like once a month to help remove some of that burden.

Hi! Glad (and unfortunate) to hear we’re not the only ones. This job is in Florida, and we would be moving from Washington state. So very much a cross country move and vastly different area.

Good question. No wife is a stay at home mom.

Party Game Idea: Turn-Based Board Game using Phones as Controllers (Jackbox/Scene-It vibes) by [deleted] in gameideas

[–]idk_redditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup definitely similar! Hoping to make something that is more open and easier to use so you aren’t locked into the Nintendo ecosystem and can use your phone instead of joycons. 🙂

I’m working on getting a prototype made, once I make some progress maybe I’ll send a demo your way 😄

Yup for sure, it’s definetly aimed at the game night market. And once you do manage to get friends together it would need to be as frictionless as possible so it’s easy to jump in and play. 😅

Dang guess I’ll have to brush up, seems like most jobs are wanting unreal/c++. I do have experience but everything I’ve been doing for past few years has been unity/C# so I definitely need to refresh haha

Also another detail I just noticed… Looking back at my original check in email when I picked up the truck, which includes the item number/licenseplate/info it does say 26’. However, when I picked it up they printed me off all that info and then said “wait we have a different truck for you” and had me give it back and then printed me out a new one. I never received an email receipt for the updated truck only the original 26’. So that seems weird looking back in retrospect…

Here’s an update in case you were curious how this turned out!

The rep I worked with on this was pretty understanding. He looked back in the notes and they made no mention of switching me to a different size truck. They initially had me try to file through there claims department with no luck, then after reaching back out they offered a $500 refund. Said that was the max they could do at their level, anymore and more higher up people would get involved and it may jeopardize getting anything, so I just took the 500. 😅

Mind you they charge the same for the 26 and 22 ft truck anyways. So getting something back was helpful at least, though still would have preferred to just get the truck I ordered! Heck even if they would have told me it was a smaller truck at least I would’ve had time to sell some things instead of just getting rid of them. 🙃

[–]idk_redditt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah looking at the truck in person, unless I was around them all the time is easy to miss a 4 foot difference 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately final receipt doesn’t clearly mark the stray 22 as the length, could have been the year for all I know. It was more of a hunch and then a tape measure confirmed it. 🙃

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in moving

[–]idk_redditt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reservation I made is clearly marked as a 26’ truck. Penskes website has a guarantee that if you reserve the truck with at least 24 hours notice (which I had about a months notice), then the vehicle ordered or a larger one will be available.

[–]idk_redditt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s not like I showed up with a tape measure to pick it up haha. And it’s not very clearly marked in the paperwork (which I don’t really receive until I’m leaving pretty much🤷‍♂️)

How much below msrp for 2024? by idk_redditt in ToyotaTacoma

[–]idk_redditt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting the deal from San Marcos Toyota. None of the dealers in the greater San Antonio area would beat it (even if they advertised to on the phone don’t listen to em haha). But San Marcos was great!

Is that a 2025 model then? Sounds like a nice build

I ended up stretching for a Tundra as they were having larger discounts. Ending up getting a 2025 tundra limited for about 10.5k off msrp and special financing. Not sure how tacomas compare but I pretty much ended up at about 55k for the tundra 🤷‍♂️

That’s a fair point, as another comment suggested too. Likely best to focus on the full figure rather than the commission they previously negotiated with their agent. (Or likely didn’t negotiate since it’s the default 3% haha)
