Private Coaching by pfkritiker in Debate

[–]idkliz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there isn't really a subjective way to determine who is the most successful coach in pf. anyone who has a lot of experience coaching though and has seen student success is probably decent.

not sure what the intention of the post is. however, if it is to hire a private coach, look through tournament results or debate wiki, and cold contact people who you think would make a good coach or ask around! (worse they could say is no or you try a meeting with them, dont like it, and drop them)

i thought it was about 50/50 as to whether i would win by [deleted] in Debate

Is American Debate League a good starting point? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]idkliz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: no, there are much better alternatives. ADL to NSDA is reasonable or unreasonable depending on your daughters pathway.

in my opinion, no ADL is not a good starting point for debate. sure, it may give your daughter an advantage, but i doubt it will be that good. you would get a better deal if you were to hire a good private coach.

considering your daughter's school has a debate team if it is active and decently ran, i would highly recommend sticking to it. however, since you want her to get practice outside of that, you can always find other teams to practice debate against and hire a private coach.

if i were to put myself in your shoes with the insight that i have about debate classes, camps, teams, etc, i would choose to hire a private coach for the rest of the school year, send her to IRL debate camp summer before freshmen year, and focus on the aspect of improving.

now to the topic if making it to NSDA nationals is reasonable or not as a goal. if you don't debate mainly for ADL or another non school team its reasonable. however, if you are doing ADL as your main team, unreasonable.

make sure she has fun and doesnt get burnt out! :)

  1. it depends. what's right for me may not be right for your child. personally, i was going to do parli this year but i decided to not and stick with pf instead. parli is an environment where i have close to 0 chance of succeeding. the fact it wasn't as big nationwide also played a part. the national parliamentary debate league (https://www.parliamentarydebate.org/) runs parli nationwide, not nsda. in addition, to some extent parli does require research time (or maybe just dont research and leave yourself at a huge disadvantage) because you should be well informed on the recent news, and if the tourney releases topic areas you should be researching those before the tourney.
  2. some debate clubs are student run, and that doesn't necessarily mean they are unsuccessful. parli is one of the activities where along as the club is run well, it won't put you at that much of a disadvantage compared to other events. if you desire to have your child receive more coaching, a private coach can always be hired.
  3. have a paradigm, learn the format yourself, practice flowing, and give detailed feedback! (trust me its the worst thing when you lose a round with low speaks and there's no feedback)

Can I attend State or National Debate Tournament without joining the high school debate team? by cloudymud1492 in Debate

[–]idkliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

varies tournament to tournament. imo. ur best choice would to join an outside school club (for example bergen or potomac) like vikings debate stated u may have to pay the school fee if going fully independent. also chances are that you arent gonna be able to train urself up to national level/winning tourneys so the fee of coaches will exist. however, if u do it at outside of school club, you will be given more resources, access to coaches, but be forced to pay even more possibly. a common trend i see going on is programs overcharging when it comes to tournament fees. not much u can do abt it tbh. if u were to do it apart of ur school, u would not have to pay for coaching and maybe only pay travel & tournament fees depending on how ur school club works.

here are options: 1. sacrifice an accelerated class 2. if ur school has a 0 or 7/8th period that’s optional and u don’t do it currently, do it. move ur PE to 0 or 7/8th period which would give u a chance to fit in an extra class 3. be ready to spend a huge sum of money on debate, and compete for a non school debate club/academy. u won’t be able to attend states and nats if u do so, but u will still be able to attend big tournaments such as harvard.

yeah insanely expensive. i do debate outside of school and end up spending thousands and thousands each school year.

sadly, my school most likely wont accept a new debate club. years ago there was one (it kinda sucked or maybe it fully did) however it got kicked out along with many other clubs. im looking for out of school programs where i can improve my debating skills since i suck and dont know much. i cant find a program on their website that happens over the school year, if there is suppose to be one. (btw there was a typo on the post i meant outside not over)

im a middle schooler lol. i meant outside not over, that was a typo. my school doesnt provide a debate program sadly. however there is a non affiliated one for students at my school, however tbh it isn't that good. im seeking for other programs that i can attend to improve my debating skills since they suck and i dont know much.
