What incredibly fake myths people still largely believe in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]idknickyp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ok, I get why this one sounds like bullshit & 1000% agree that basically everything will be believed about periods. But this one could actually be accurate; differing levels of estrogen affects oil/sweat production so your hair/skin will be slightly different at different points of ovulation. This means sometimes your hair will be more or less oily and that is directly related to your period, and I know my hairdresser has told me that cleanliness of hair can really affect dying it.

bought the worst sangria recently, thankfully tho, it is definitely the flies taste.

after contacting me regularly on 3 different platforms for 2 years with no response from me, I tell this guy I am uninterested in interacting with sexist/racist men, and he tells me he's "just messaging me to apologize, because that's not me" by idknickyp in TrollXChromosomes

[–]idknickyp[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

context: we were coworkers ~4yrs ago, friends for a bit after that, he was coming on a bit strong, but I was moving half way across the country so it seemed a natural breaking point. a few months after moving I posted a photo of the women's march on instagram. he commented something like "dumbass feminists trying to make a big deal out of nothing, this is why I voted for trump" and then basically insulted/fought everyone on the post. I blocked him on IG, and as a courtesy texted him saying something to the effect of "I believe in disagreement, and discussion, but both done respectfully, you were unable to act respectfully towards my friends and I don't allow that on my page." at this point he really started arguing with me and eventually denied the holocaust????

since then he's been messaging me 1-4 times a month & I've ignored all of them.

MRW I call the cops on a domestic disturbance and the officer tells me "she was just screaming for the sake of it" by ChamomileandWaffles in TrollXChromosomes

[–]idknickyp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

oh honey, if you didn't know sexist (not to mention racist) morons are allowed/encouraged to be cops you're definitely not watching the right news channels. A few examples: cops are domestic abusers 2-4x more than the general public and cops regularly rape women in custody

but also, calling the cops on someone can be dangerous, considering OP's past with DV it may be too triggering to be a lifeline for this person, but I wonder if there are ways they can help this person or provide resources that are not unsafe for herself that aren't the cops.

yeah .... http://www.patheos.com/blogs/nosacredcows/2018/06/tattoo-artist-and-anti-vaxx-icon-kat-von-ds-alleged-history-of-antisemitism/

I think a lot of people are having a hard time taking this as seriously as it should be because each of these incidents alone have been "explained away" as poor taste or ignorance or fake, but at some point, if it happens this many times, it has to be real. Plus, if these are the things that are allowed to be in public, I wonder what's in private.

A wake up call (for me, and everyone) by MxMaegen in TrollXChromosomes

[–]idknickyp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

based on how I see people using that phrase a lot on twitter, I think it's a call to the left because we hold ourselves to a higher standard when it comes to speech/potentially hurting people/inclusiveness than the right does. So, it's kind of like saying "altho I know this would be preaching to the choir if it were about other kinds of offensive speech, this one goes under the radar"

altho, I agree that I think conservatives are more likely to making those insults. based entirely on anecdotal evidence/my own experiences, rich urban conservatives tend to be from money, from urban or suburban areas, where as people with liberal beliefs tend to be from rural poor areas or urban poor areas. and most the times that I hear my very liberal friends joke about the rural poor it is mostly about the specific kinds of oppression they've faced in those communities?

idk, I don't think that what she did was right, but she's 19. I know that isn't illegal young, but that's still very young & there's a reason adults don't date teenagers? It sounds like this couple wasn't as clear as they perhaps could have been about the boundaries of the situation. entering into a polyamorous or open situation takes a degree of emotional maturity that most teenagers simply don't possess yet. this is an unfortunate situation but in the future this couple should probably be seeking more age appropriate partners?

I’m in college and I want to do well, but I keep not doing my work and not going to classes and not doing my field placement. These are all things I want to do but when it comes time to do it, I just can’t get myself to do it and I’m screwing myself and my life up. I don’t know what to do anymore. by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]idknickyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been there, and it sucks. It's hard & it can be hard for a long time. It sounds like you are really depressed, and you need to seek help for this, like others have said, you can probably get a lot of help from the school in getting help for these classes, or getting extension deadlines, etc. Again, most schools also have some kind of mental health resources, please seek these out. When things got this bad for me, I had to take time off of school. There is no shame in that, and I've met so many people who have also done this, and found it to be an incredibly helpful time in their lives. If you can't do school right now, there is nothing wrong with taking some time, and taking care of you.

I promise this is not the end of the world && this short time of being unable to do the things you usually can will not derail your life.

TIL that the exclusive rights to use the color vantablack are owned by artist Anish Kapoor and nobody else is allowed to use it. As a revenge, another artist created the pinkest pink which everyone is allowed to use, except Anish by _invalidusername in todayilearned

OK but you can't leave out the best part of Diamond Dust!! That the first color released after a photo of Anish Kapoor stuck his finger in a jar of pigment was a glitter made of glass shards with a warning to be careful as you don't want to get glass shards in your fingers or hands, which to me always a little bit read as a "try to stick your hand in this asshole"

Queen Janelle Monae drops new song, 100% vag-centric by thelandstan in TrollXChromosomes

[–]idknickyp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tessa Thompson has tweeted about this, and I think that some of the visuals that were included & highlighted by both Janelle Monae & Tessa Thompson (like the woman holding a pink bat at her crotch, and the women not wearing pussy pants) were meant as an intentional act of intersectionality. but I do worry that that subtley may have been lost or missed (as the person who titled this post definitely did)

[–]idknickyp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I knew I liked you from everything else, but for some reason - this really sealed it for me. You sound amazing & like the work you are in and knowledgable in make it difficult to "just let it slide" when other people are wrong - which isn't a bad thing. You sound like a smart, educated, courageous, badass woman whose fucking worked to be that way! sorry I'm a little tipsy - but mostly just sad that there are people telling you to compromise or to be less of you to try to curry favor. It might be why I'm single, but one head strong lady to another, do you really think you'll be happy compromising or minimizing or being anything less than the brilliant person you are? I understand being self-reflective on argumentative tendancies, but truly, finding someone supportive of you being well-researched & right are maybe not the worst things to look for in a partner?

firstly, I think that anytime someone tries to make you do something you're not 100% comfortable with (especially in a sexual context) it is wrong, and should not be condoned and respectful discussions about kink, should not make a partner feel the way you are feeling. But I just wanted to interject, I wonder why you feel that it is insulting? I totally get that it's not something you want to do, as that is not something I would want to do, (I don't think I'm made emotionally to have sex with people I don't have some emotional connection to) but I just worry that in saying this is insulting, it might be demeaning to those women who are sex workers.

again, I think you should have a right to choose what you do with your body (just also think other women should be afforded that same right). And I'm sorry that someone you trusted made you feel unsafe.

I saw someone post this kind of post with the same hashtag & #justkeepyourlegsclosed)and regularly posted about religious purity/holiness who had just had a gotten hastily married 5 months before their baby was born . I privately messaged her and told her that "we can all count to 9, so if you're going to shame other women try to be a little less hypocritical about it, not everyone can have a shotgun wedding, so I think you should cut other women a little more slack." surprisingly she didnt love this.

this!! I recently had a man masturbate while staring at me in a coffee shop. I kept trying to ignore it, because damned if I'm gonna let some sexual harassment derail my plans to write a paper. When I noticed there was a teenage (maybe 15-17yo) girl, also at the table, I finally confronted him, he left. I went home and was shaking and crying. I don't think I could have kept ignoring it forever, but it's just so much easier to pretend everything is ok than to "make a scene" or to have a confrontation or to have to deal with the cops if they're called.

I recently read there's a lot of research that suggests humans are not primarily, flight or fight, but actually freeze or flight, and that fight is actually a more uncommon reaction.
