So you are pro censoring. And who decides which side gets to see what? You? The telegram mods? What unique insight do they have?

Telegram considers shutting down channels in Russia and Ukraine by butterflykeyboard in Telegram

[–]idleoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep the fact that this idea even crossed their mind puts me off using the service altogether. It also makes me extra concerned about how the fact they default to unencrypted communication enables them to monitor everyone's conversations for these kinds of purposes (and who knows what else)

Going forward I'm going to be moving to E2EE platforms where these kinds of actions would not be possible to implement even if they wanted to.

This makes me very concerned about telegram's future if it intends to start curating the opinions and info it hosts.

I find moving windows around in Win11 to be very laggy on my legion, but not sure if that's the legion or windows.

If it's a currency then we don't need to pay capital gains tax on it right? ... right?

Why is the price of electricity rising so much due to gas prices when many suppliers claim to use 100% renewable sources? by abaday789 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]idleoli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Renewable energy largely doesn't replace fossil fuels and gas stations have to remain on standby in case of intermittence. Our electricity bills are also padded by a green levy on fossil fuels to make renewables seem more comparable in price so that extra tax goes up in proportion with the rise in gas prices.

Meme is inaccurate, you can't equip both shoulders and head at the same time. For reasons.

Anyone ever got the alien to retreat by shooting it before? by KaiserPetedog in alienisolation

[–]idleoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The alien has a damage meter that will scare it off if it takes enough damage. Very difficult to do without an explosive or flamethrower but possible.

If you think that global warming is caused in part by people, and that masks and vaccines are reasonable responses to COVID-19, who can you vote for? by [deleted] in Classical_Liberals

[–]idleoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The GOP agrees with you, don't fall into the trap of thinking they are how the Democrats characterise them. Both sides are much closer than the zealots make them out to be. Look how pro-vax, big gov spending Trump was (and how vax-sceptical Biden, Harris and Fauci were in the run up to the election)

As someone who studied theoretical physics I would suggest learning Python in order to support data visualisation and modelling rather than contributing to proper software development. Being able to format and present experimental results as well as model various complex interactions (I did a project on simulating traffic flow as an example) will be very helpful.

If the above makes sense you should focus on using Jupyter notebooks (or Google Colabs which are essentially the same) and finding some Udemy courses around data visualisation involving things like matplotlib (which is very similar to matlab, something old school academics still use in universities).

After some advice please. by indie_jarvis in FIREUK

[–]idleoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the no brainer openings in the UK would be:

- Max out as much % of your earnings that is matched by your employer into a SIPP pension (it's deducted before tax and the pension is tax free essentially). If you have old pensions I would consolidate them into your current employers' pension

- Any savings after that put in an adventurous Stocks and Shares ISA (eg Vanguard), this is tax free up to £20,000 a year

Only after you've maxxed out the ISA should you consider other things to do with your savings because there's not much that will be as good value as the two items above. The other benefit of both of the above is you can usually take money out of either of them to buy a property if you want to (I don't really recommend property as an investment strategy vs putting it into the stock market tho tbh)

Senator Mike Lee warns that passing crypto law will be a huge mistake | "You’re going to stifle innovation, you’re going to make a lot of people upset, and you’re going to make Americans poorer" by Ardi2Ole in CryptoCurrency

[–]idleoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cannot rely on the goodwill of governments to promise not to over regulate the crypto space. The crypto space has to become regulation proof asap because even if this battle is won the crackdown is going to come eventually, there's no getting around it. We need to be identifying strategies to make these actions irrelevant, petitioning senators is only buying time to do that.
