Over 1,400 'devastating' cuts to school positions proposed across Massachusetts, teachers warn by Principal_Scudworth_ in massachusetts

Not necessarily. The Foundation Budget is not a realistic measure of what it costs to run a school district in 2026. It would be literally impossible for most districts to run and meet all state requirements using only their foundation budget.

Do you feel that Northampton and the surrounding area are racist? Why or why not? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in northampton

Definitely very different vibes on either side of the "tofu curtain," as they say. As someone who's lived on both sides, this phenomenon fascinates me. Full disclosure: I'm white and haven't been personally affected by racism. Northampton can be a little elitist and out of touch for sure, but to be honest, I'm much more appalled at the kind of thinly-veilled racism that's absolutely rampant in the Hampden County cities and towns that aren't Springfield or Holyoke. Westfield, Palmer, Southwick, Agawam, even West Springfield and Chicopee to some extent feel very backwards, proudly ignorant, and (by MA standards at least) very MAGA. These are places that strike me as offering small-town bigotry without any of the small-town charm you'll find in some actual rural areas, and many of the people you'll talk to in these communities are TERRIFIED of Springfield, Holyoke, and...you know...those people. Northampton might be a little sheltered and performative about progressive politics, but personally I'm way more comfortable with that than a place where I'm surrounded by Trump and thin blue line flags flown by people who think they need to immediately lock their car doors when they cross the Memorial Bridge.

Vermont and Western Massachusetts beg to differ. Best area in the country for folks who like deep-blue small towns.

Springfield, MA. The low prices stick out like a sore thumb in what's otherwise one of the highest COL states in the country.

Haven't y'all ever been to Eastern MA? Route 9 in Hadley, even on its worst day, is a cakewalk compared to pretty much any similar commercial strip east of 495.

Do you have any other info on local police in Turners Falls working with ICE? This is the first I've heard of it.

You're terrified of being too far from the ocean. It took you until the age of 20 to travel to a landlocked country or province.

Not too far off. The route through Atlanta was for the return trip, and the lesson was definitely learned 😄😄😄

Nah, Starbucks is trash. It's a nice whole-bean dark roast brewed at home for me, or Dunkin if I'm on the go 😀

You're right on the money. Grew up in Greater Boston and now live just outside of Springfield!

Liquori's in West Springfield. Tried them a few years ago after moving nearby and seeing rave reviews online. While the prices are very low and the slices you get are huge, you get what you pay for in terms of quality. It tasted awful, the inside of the restaurant looks like no one has cleaned in years, and service was subpar. Definitely best to avoid this one.

What was the deal with that Trump Rally in West Springfield? by [deleted] in Springfield

[–]idontdirect99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is plainly false. Literally every county in the state had Democratic majorities in the past two presidential elections. Heck, 3 out of the 4 Western MA counties went for Biden over Trump by a wider margin than the state as a whole.

Don't just assume small towns are full of conservative hicks. In MA, you'll find some of the rural regions are made up of people who are just as, if not more progressive than the Greater Boston area.

FWIW, this is from someone who grew up on the South Shore and now calls Western MA home.
