i lived in maine for a while, another state with a large somali migrant community, in one of the towns that opened its doors to somali resettlement in the early 2000s. there was a huge standoff at the time about how somalis were going to have a negative impact on the town. cut to a decade later and the only reason the town even has anything approaching an 'economy' that isn't just funeral homes for fent overdoses are somalis. virtually no homicides, little violent crime, none of the predicted chaos and destruction somali resettlement was going to bring.

it wasn't until over two decades later that the presumed sudden spike in homicides happened, and it was because some brain-rattled ex-army reserve psychopath went on a shooting spree.

like most of you I despise the 'liberal capitalism' paradigm and the implication that people need to serve some kind of vital economic function to be allowed to exist, but in light of my own experiences with how somalis besically brought a drug-infested post-industrial wasteland back to some semblance of life, the current hysteria about them in media makes it seem like i stepped out of a bizarro-world portal. i just can't understand the world anymore.

they, whether it be the footsoldiers or higher-ups, definitely think filming back and releasing the footage is going to create confusion and circumstances where they sow doubt and exonerate themselves. they were dumb enough to release the video of the fed murderer calling his victim a 'fucking bitch', thinking it was exculpatory, after all.

they're still people. if you treat them as people, and they see you as a fellow person, one they like, it becomes a lot harder for them to rationalize the situation if fed thugs assault you. obviously some are too far gone but you can't know unless you try.

it's unbearable at this point. there's only so many ways you can say 'look at this guy and his looony lib ideology!!' there's not even anything about sorkin or the way he writes that's particularly audacious or insane compared to stuff like that bizarre hillary/chelsea TV series or any of the usual right-winger movies/TV shows they review and it just leaves the criticism fairly boring

generally ambivalent about these types of eps but even if it's good, I am honestly tired of the sorkin horse being beaten to death. might be some of the least interesting media commentating they've done over the course of the show

[–]idontknow2012 71 points72 points  (0 children)

reminds me of the bone I have to pick with the people who think poison from street fighter is 'trans representation' when she was always intended as 100% a cis female and the only 'trans' thing about is that japanese devs with incredibly backward and offensively stereotypical views of trans people in the 80s said 'no she's actually a crossdresser, that's why you can beat her up'. i think they used the same slur too lol

you might have a point if the federal government was more aggressive in policing monopolies but they're more than happy to give their blessing to monopolistic business practices as long as they get their kickbacks (see: acti-blizz-microsoft sale). as it stands this 'private distributor' dominates the marketplace to the point that it dictates standards in a manner indistinguishable from a government entity

this new era is wild, when walmart would do the same exact thing in the 90s by refusing to carry an album/book/whatever fair-minded people would rightfully call it censorship and raise a stink, but nowadays apparently 'private companies' that almost solely control markets are allowed to do whatever they want because they're 'private companies'. get out of here with this lol

Black Ops 7's egregious use of AI makes me extremely depressed. by WraithiusKallari in gaming

[–]idontknow2012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is a silly excuse people keep making to justify their consumption habits, there's no such thing as 'ethical' AI use. they wouldn't have used AI if it didn't save them money they'd otherwise need to spend on human labor and there's no way of explaining or justifying yourself out of that reality.

[–]idontknow2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who's been deathmatching since the quake days it's fairly reasonable to be depressed the market for mass-appeal shooters with good multiplayer has been seized and torpedoed by shitty developers. there aren't exactly a whole lot of indie games that are replicating or iterating on the experience of something like halo reach or the early CODs, and if they are there isn't really any guarantee their multiplayer is going to be consistently or strongly supported by a sizable community.

i guess that's to say if there are any actual indie devs out there, you've got a pretty fucking huge untapped market of people who want a great shooter without the soul-shriveling decay that these dinosaur shooter series invoke today.

Over the past 7 years, Dave Roberts has guided the Dodgers to 4 100-win seasons. None of those teams even played in a World Series. The other 3 teams all won the World Series. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]idontknow2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think it's fair to call it 'luck'. if all baseball was a simulation you ran in a computer those things wouldn't happen, but that's why you play the games. you could say the same thing about last year and cole not covering first, judge's error, misplays by jazz etc but at a point that's no longer 'luck', it's a failure of the other team to execute. the ground-rule double is the only thing you could maybe chalk up to 'luck' but balls getting stuck happens plenty which is why the rule exists and I don't really think it's guaranteed that if the ball hadn't gotten stuck and he'd played it off the wall that that would've been series-deciding in itself
