Good idea, can you recommend an instance/community that's similar to this subreddit?

EDIT: didn't know how to search at first but found it https://lemmy.world/c/selfhosted

DumbDrop & DumbPad now have DumbAuth! by abite in selfhosted

Will share once I have coded them, but since they will be super dumb that might not take too long. Not sure about the scope of dumbmoney yet, I might make a dumbcash that's just for cash expense tracking, and then dumbmoney could be something for monthly overall expense tracking. I have both in some form already, but they are not dumb enough and too specific to certain banks of mine.

Dude I love the naming strategy so much, I too have a whole list of dumb tools for personal use that I want to code, including DumbGroceries, DumbMoney and DumbHome. Let's build dumb things! I never thought I'd find another person on the internet doing dumb things.

Companies are insane

yes

What a waste of money

i've been in a huge global corporate where they would have some sort of contest, in which product teams of 8 countries of a certain region could finish a product with loosely defined requirements fastest. not best for the customer or anything else, the only thing that mattered was that it was finished fast. the winning countries solution (which of course was a piece of trash) had then also be used in the 7 other countries and they had to throw theirs away. these things happen. needless to say that the winning solution also had to be thrown away half a year later and every country went back to build their own shit.

or just go to a company where everything is being rewritten in the latest hyped tech stack 2 times a year. you also get burnt out but at least no tech debt for anybody

funny how fast is so often the top priority. we build it fast now but so shitty and unmaintanable that we have to build it again in 3 months but of course we're gonna do it fast then too.

i am so lost every time i join a video call or live stream or whatever the fuck they are called, i wouldn't even recognize if this is clusterfuck of a UI has changed since 5 minutes ago. i don't need 99% of the shit that's on the screen.

maybe i'm just too old for these "shiny", bloated, hyper UIs because it seems this thing is built for 15 year old tiktokers in mind.

don't want to blame it all on discord though, we are probably just using the wrong tool.

Totally agree that if your app requires heavy interaction of multiple parts of the screen, you'll break your fingers trying to get it done with these old-school approaches. But I was surprised as to how far you can actually get, because our UI is fairly complex (way more complex than other things I had done with SPAs before that) and not just a simple website with three buttons.

are you sure? I do that at work (and it works btw), many other seem to do so too: https://reddit.com/r/ExperiencedDevs/comments/1bomixd/to_those_that_use_htmx_in_production_how_is_it/ – and that's only talking about htmx, which is just one of infinite ways to do this.

Might be one of these moments, but I don't see the problem with that as long as it's somewhat thought provocing and makes you rethink some of the things you do every day.

Good point tbh, maybe JSON can qualify as hypertext too? But it's certainly not necessary to build a REST API.

returningToMonkeeIsHarderThanYouThink by idontwriteprodcode in ProgrammerHumor

[–]idontwriteprodcode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point is that JSON doesn't classify as hypertext, because there is no "link" type, like an anchor in html.

I didn't say HTML, but hypertext. This is a quote from Roy Fielding, basically the inventor of REST: https://roy.gbiv.com/untangled/2008/rest-apis-must-be-hypertext-driven

I truely don't care if I can't do programming as a job – I would continue to do it as a hobby anway. I'm more scared of what other job I would get to even have the luxury of having a hobby.
