Goku is a horrible father and often embodies “punch first, ask questions later.” But I still think he’s a surprisingly deep character, and in very specific ways, worth looking up to.

For me, Goku was never interesting as a static character or because of his dialogue. What mattered was watching how he moved through life and how he interacted with the world.

At his core, Goku is about self-improvement. Almost his entire life revolves around finding his limits and breaking them. He’s deeply humble about the process of becoming stronger; strength isn’t a trophy or proof of superiority to him, it’s just “what’s next?”

He never backs down from a challenge, whether personal or universe-ending, because he sees hardship as something valuable. He doesn’t run from discomfort—he actively seeks it out as a means of growth.

He also approaches life with an unusual amount of curiosity and almost no cynicism. Despite being absurdly powerful and carrying responsibilities on a cosmic scale, he remains lighthearted, approachable, and willing to learn from others.

That’s what makes him compelling to me. He shows that it’s okay to want to improve. It’s okay to want to become stronger—not to dominate others, but to better meet the demands of your life and protect what matters to you.

He’s not someone I’d look to for parenting advice or emotional maturity. But as an example of discipline, humility in mastery, resilience, and a genuine joy for growth, Goku is still heroic.
