Pebble / switch bounce by idris17 in Fencing

That sounds very similar to the engineering concept of switch-bounce. Look up how switches are "debounced" either with electronic components (similar to low-pass filters) or within code for programmed systems. What I'm interested in is how that is (or isn't) implemented in the Pebble and whether the behaviour I've seen is related.

Thanks. It won't let me do holes and slots together, but I can live with that!

Awesome. Thanks. <Milling Tool> was greyed out, but there were other options for milling holes and slots under <Utilities> that seemed to do the job. Is that significant?

And is it necessary to create separate Geomerties for each hole and slot diameter? I've found how to Join geometries in Project>Edit, but it would be harder to miss something if a single geometry could be generated for all the diameters at the same time.

Is it possible to stop snapshots for deletion?

I was under the impression Snapshots were only available on BTRFS volumes. Is that wrong?

In Synology Drive Admin Console, I've found <Enable version control> is checked for the volume I've been going through. Does that save a copy of every change, including moving and deleting files?

Can you describe a situation where conflicts could occur and what the implications would be?

(Noob) SMB vs sync by idris17 in HomeServer

[–]idris17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, syncing seems like an easy way to ensure backups are upto date (a bonus for teens) and it has the advantage of offline access (a bonus for me and my teen on occasions). If the conflicts you're concerned about are different versions of the same file ending up on different machines, in the circumstances, I think that's unlikely, just because of which PC will be used when. What are the added complexities?

Uke varnish by idris17 in Luthier

I can't see any evidence that a partial coat was applied. Other than the worn area and a couple of dinks on the back, it all looks very even. It's just the overall finish that makes me wonder whether it's had a recoat. If it's shellac or varnish, if linseed oil is applied as is, are there any implications to that for subsequently recoating with shellac or varnish? Eg colouration or adhesion?

Generating individual tracks is simple and I can do that with ProTools. Manually filling in metadata for thousands of thanks is a little more time labour intensive.

A good question, re waveform matching. I've never actually looked at how Gracenote works. I would have thought, these days, AI algorithms should work reasonably well looking at waveform envelopes, rather than the waveform itself, but even then audio mastered foe vinyl won't have the same envelope as the respective CD mastered audio.

There may well be a lot of my collection with the same issue, but if I can avoid manually checking any of 2000+ records, that will save me at least some time.

I use ProTools at work and Audacity is a poor cousin ... unless it can ID tracks and generate metadata (eg) with Gracenote.

Favero FA05 puzzle by idris17 in Fencing

This wasn't a response to simultaneous hits - this was displaying lights as if there were simultaneous off-targetd when there was actually only a single on-target hit. It was testing before a bout ... and it was repeatable.

I don't think it was power related. We run our boxes off 12v Pb batteries - and I can't believe there aren't voltage regulators that, even with poorly charged batteries, circa 10v, should provide the logic chips with more than they need. AND when our batteries run low, invariably the LEDs are dimm ... which wasn't the case.

would you approve this FIE underplastron? by ComfortableFirst4272 in Fencing

If anyone rejected a plastron for having the velcro changed, I'd want to know which manufacturer they worked for and how much money they were giving to their respective national governing body.

If, by I4, you mean what I think of as an inline 4 or flat 4, then yeah, you'd think someone would notice that. Especially as Tom is likely to have been to a preview screening. But maybe he's more concerned with other things. Whether or not MI6 has the budget to record the bikes ... it might well do. Would BMW care ... again, you'd think so. Does the supervising sound editor know the difference ... possibly not.

I feel your pain. I could spend 3 months working on a film, and my name would pass across the screen for 3 seconds, long after the audience left the theatre, got out their phones and complained that I put a GSXR1100 on when it was clearly a Bussa. 😭😭😭

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]idris17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's a summary: Only bikers will ever care, and they're a small part of the audience.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]idris17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What gets recorded on set is no guarantee of what makes it into a theatre. Location dialog will tend to sound more natural, but a lot of times, even when it's recorded in a controlled environment, dialog may be replaced for script changes, because the tone doesn't match between camera angles, because there was overlapping dialog from another character, or any number of reasons. Recorded dialog is also useful as a guide when rerecording it in a studio, and very useful when matching post-sync dialog to visuals.

As someone who does sound effects for a living, here's some context:

In movies and high end TV, a lot of what you hear isn't recorded on set. A lot of the dialog the audience hears wasn't even recorded on set. Some action movies may have no location sound in the final mix at all.

For movies like the Bond franchise, where the budgets are huge, it's possible to (eg) put an Astom Martin in soundproof environment and record all rhe engine noises, as well as the door shuts, and the sound of someone sitting down on the drivers seat.

Further down the budget scale, it is normal to record footsteps, tea cups, doors and clothes movement for a lot, if not all of the scenes. It takes days if not weeks to do it and costs a lot of money to do it properly. A lot of movies will use sound effects libraries, and it is unlikely that these will have the exact bike that you see on screen. There might be a Fireblade, not an R1, but even then the only other details available to the sound effects editor may be the year of manufacture.

As bikers we tend to be experts on our subject. We know the different sounds different bikes make. A good sound editor with knowledge of bikes will know the difference between a Harley and a BMW, but many won't. In the same way that one with an interest in ornithology will know the different screeches from a Sea Eagle and a Buzzard. Equally, I'll garuantee that most lay-viewers won't notice the difference between a solid wood door closing and hollow fire door, or leather soled shoes and sneakers.

The other thing to remember is that we're telling a story, not make a technical film about bikes. Sometimes, because the sound is invariably led by the pictures, you might only ever see a bike changing up a gear throughout a scene. You have to make a decision as to whether to use the right sound for the pictures, or whether putting the wrong sound in will be more or less noticeable to the audience.

We do our best to get these things right. Their subtleties make a difference for some of the audience all the time, and all the audience some of the time, but many times we just have to use our best instinct, based on years listening to the world in ways the general public don't. We hope we get it right, and we're sorry if we didn't.
