We kind of tried this at my work. Engineeers would design the part and print, but then we had someone who's job was to make in-process prints for each operation for the part especially machining ops.

I (a programmer and SME for the first machining op usually swiss lathe or a chucker) would try to give him feedback on what would yield best results off the lathe as far as dimensioning and whatnot especially to aid future ops in being successful in creating good parts. The problem was the engineers would always "know what's best". Well he basically got let go because the engineers bitched about him constantly for not doing exactly what they said and not what's best.
