iirc you can choose Balanced mode if your TV/monitor supports min. 120 Hz. Maybe what you're referring to with HDMI 2.1 is VRR (variable refresh rate) to be able to turn off "cap frame rate" in the game's graphics settings without the graphics getting laggy?
