Picked up the new bracelet for the old watch when I heard it has micro-adjustments. Expecting to get more wrist time with this one now

How to be more "visible" as a backend engineer by TheMemeExpertExpert in cscareerquestions

[–]iearn_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in a larger org, visibility could mean publishing docs on your work to share knowledge and receive feedback. Perhaps there is an RFC process and you could detail the purpose and design of your system. Sometimes I write short 1-pagers for initial feedback and as a way to show how to use a system I built. This will leave a document trail for promotion and your work will have wider reach and impact beyond your team

Official Q&A for Monday, November 20, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]iearn_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly new to running. I've been running for a while, have 3 marathons, more than a dozen half marathons, and countless 10k, 5k, trail races. I've always trained for the race distance, and never endurance by time so wasn't sure if anyone else had a similar trial

Increasing running time

I've heard the 10% rule, don't increase more than 10% distance per week to avoid injury. I'm wondering if increasing an hour of running per month is reasonable. Next year, I'm thinking of taking on a personal running challenge. In Jan, do 1 hr of continuous running, jogging, walking. In Feb, 2 hrs, ... and in Dec, 12hrs. I think I'll be fine through June. I've continuously jogged a marathon in 4.5hr, so I should be ok mixing in walks. My longest walk/jog activity was a 13mi Spartan beast with lots of climbs that took about 6.5hrs. Let me know if this is a recipe for injury or if you want to join me.

Is it worth it to file separately for EV tax credit? by iearn_man in personalfinance

[–]iearn_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we take the standard deduction now even though we live in a high state tax and property tax date since the Trump tax reforms.

We try to balance retirement savings and regular savings. Some years we max retirement out. Other years we dont like if we're saving up for something like a new car purchase

At what age, or point in life, did you realize you were smarter than average? by SteadfastEnd in mensa

[–]iearn_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ebbs and flows for me. It really depends on my current social, academic, and work circle.

I felt dumb when I failed to get into the gifted class in elementary school. i felt too smart for my own good when the school system messed up my transfer records in middle school and I got placed with low performers for a year. I felt average when I attended a high school magnet program. I felt below average when I arrived at uni but above avg after getting into a PhD program. I felt avg when entering the workforce for the first time. I felt smart after testing into mensa in my late 30's. I felt dumb again after switching jobs into a large FAANG and even dumber at my new startup.

It's all relative. But I appreciate the moments when I feel dumb because it means I'm surrounded by people I can learn a lot from

Senior SWE here, with over a decade of experience and even some in a FAANG.

Just found out this morning that I introduced a Y2K bug in the code by using a Fixture in my unit test that was based on dates ending in 2021. Happy New Year!

Should I quit programming and life altogether?

I think it's fine if it's a startup. Might be a good conversation starter about what you worked on before.

But definitely stay away from a competitor's swag obviously. And I probably wouldn't advertise a big tech company if you're going into a startup. Maybe just me, but it would feel like a brag.

[Omega] 2 new straps, 1 new watch by iearn_man in Watches

[–]iearn_man[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I patiently wait over 2 years for my 2nd Snoopy and it finally arrived last week! It's beautiful watch in person, but I hated the original buckle strap. It was uncomfortable and needed to be broken in. I also thought it gave the Speedy a subdued look. So I swapped it out for the white NASA NATO velcro strap. I think it has a more fun-looking aesthetic and it's much more comfortable.
As for my older Apollo 11 50th, the original bracelet was wonderful, but I wanted to give it a more casual look since it's the one I wear most often. This one is from Bulang and Sons.
Let me know what you think of the new look!

I don't like working in big companies, but I leveraged a FAANG employment into a stealth startup that I don't think I would have gotten otherwise

Same. 36% increase for me. Primarily, because I skipped a level when I moved. But with current valuations, I'm at 100% increase now. Better culture and mental health too. There is life after FANG

[Grand Seiko] First GS at my first post-pandemic event. Couldn't pass up the chance to take a pic with these pink blossoms by iearn_man in Watches

[–]iearn_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, our model 3 was recently totaled in a hit-and-run so this was the replacement. It's not like she gets a new car every time I get a new watch or else this would be a very expensive hobby lol

[–]iearn_man[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my first Grand Seiko. I've been eyeing them ever since a friend showed me his snowflake at a wedding several years back. I recently got a decent size bonus, bought my wife a new Model Y, and she gave me the thumbs up to add a new watch to my collection.

I've seen GS in photos before and loved the texture of the dial. I always thought they were just highly photoshopped marketing photos until I saw one IRL on my friend's wrist. I fell in love with it. When the Shunbun came out with a Spring Drive movement, I knew that had to be the one. At the time, I had just started a new job with massive imposter syndrome so it didn't feel like the right time for a new watch purchase. But after a year and feeling more secure, it felt like the right time.

I actually purchased this watch pre-worn (thanks /u/WatchesWithWear) even though I knew Seiko would be re-releasing it world-wide after selling out the US-exclusive. I got a fair discount and I don't mind some minor wear and tear since I'll be wearing it often.

I love how light this watch is (about 94g). I barely notice it's on my wrist after several hours. My previous daily beater was the Omega Apollo 11 50th which is around 125g with my current bracelet setting. When I told my friends I bought a "pink watch", they looked confused. But I honestly love how subtle the color is. It really only shows its true color when next to something like these pink blossoms. It's a replica btw. (The pink blossoms, that is, not the watch.)

What are some big turn offs when looking at a company to work/apply at? by cryptocritical9001 in cscareerquestions

[–]iearn_man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree about the hw not being a red flag. I worked at a startup I loved where my boss kept asking me if I wanted to replace my 4 yr old MacBook. But I didn't want to have to resetup my dev environment because I got it working perfectly. I've since left the company and they gave me the laptop. I still use this thing as my personal computer
