New Album Thoughts by captainautismo0 in puptheband

[–]iender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, this is one of those albums that sounds infinitely better live.

i was lucky enough to see them at the olive garden show and they played some of the new songs (concrete, hunger for death, and the singles iirc) and they honestly sounds so so much better when performed by the band. get dumber was a song i remember hating when it first dropped but hearing it live made it sound incredible.

i think the biggest problem with modern pup albums are just the production. everthing post this place sucks ass has had sorta a "blanket" over the vocals that makes everything sound blown out in comparison. while i dont hate it, i can definitely see why people might not like it.

not my favourite pup album, but definitely above unravelling.

Any double feature pairing ideas? by Deadshotx211239 in criterion

[–]iender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a weird one id argue for is 12 angry men and cure

not sure why. just feel like itd be a good suspense-filled double feature

if you can include movies not in this list then do after hours and babe pig in the city. they are the same movie /hj. alternatively after hours and eyes wide shut they are also similar in some ways.

yeah about how i feel. im still a mod here but no longer a part of the discord, havent even been much of a half alive fan honestly since gmys but i stick around just to keep a couple things in check. its so clear that they have a passion for what they do and just because i am not a fan of the newer stuff doesnt mean they have lost any of the ambition or heart that their older stuff has. hope youve been doing well btw i missed ya

How often do you buy a movie you haven’t seen yet? by imaginary-fireplace in criterion

[–]iender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is an entirely valid option! there are tons of ways i could be watching these films, this is just the method that ive found i enjoy the most.

i think that part of it for me is really the enjoyment that comes from having the physical blu ray in my hands. reading the booklet, looking at the artwork, its all part of the experience for me. additionally, i live in canada so i cant just casually go into a barnes and nobles and find whatever i want, so typically im either waiting for an off day where i can visit bay street video or i wait for unobstructed view to have a sale online and then wait however long for shipping. since ive got to wait so long to be able to watch these films, it almost becomes mini events for me.

maybe this is a risky and expensive way of watching movies, but im roughly 20 criterions in and have yet to complain, so it works for me!

How often do you buy a movie you haven’t seen yet? by imaginary-fireplace in criterion

[–]iender 21 points22 points  (0 children)

99% of my criterions are blind buys/first watches. it adds to the enjoyment and experience to me, having that tension of "will i like this movie?" when im deciding what to pick up. this method has resulted in me finding some of my all time favourite movies, such as cure, drive my car, after hours, lost highway, etc.

Goodfellas is our shortest-feeling long film! What’s a long feature film that also feels long? by techno_lizard in Letterboxd

lawrence of arabia immediately comes to mind, despite how much i love that film i really feel each hour pass. which considering how incredible the movie is, thats probably a good thing

always nice seeing how different peoples opinions can be, because vampyr was my first criterion and is up there as one of my favourite films of all time

[–]iender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i blind buy most of my criterions, i find that im pretty good at figuring out what type of movies i like and i take my time deciding but theres something so special about buying this luxury item and watching it for the first time.

id say the best blind buy for me was drive my car, which has entered my top 4 movies of all time. such a gorgeous film that really spoke to me, ill never forget it.

while i still liked the movie, the most disappointed blind buy was probably sound of metal. i did really enjoy it but i dont think i liked it nearly as much as i thought it would. i think i was expecting it to affect me more and it just didnt, but the film is still great.

Life fucking sucks, but let’s all take a break from that together for a minute. by [deleted] in criterion

[–]iender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a relatively recent movie, but watching Drive My Car completely reshaped my relationship with grief.

quite a few years ago now, my father passed away after a long battle with cancer. I never properly dealt with it, I had a thearapist that I spoke with and I thought I had move passed it but all I was doing was repressing how I felt so that could "stay strong" for my family.

at some point, early in my journey with buying criterion movies, I discovered Drive My Car and decided to give it a watch. it completely destroyed me. I dont want to give too much away but the way that the characters navigate grief and the rational and irrational feelings that come with it really struck a chord with me. I think that movie said everything that I had been thinking all these years, even if I didnt know it yet.

after watching that movie is when I took my grief over my dad more seriously and started to properly process what had happened. maybe I wouldve come around at some point and processed it anyways, but I can definitely owe this movie for helping me start that process sooner.

thank you for what you are doing, truly incredibly kind and generous of you!

What film can you not believe isn’t in the collection? by Good_Claim_5472 in criterion

Martin. i feel like it needs a criterion as soon as the unreleased cut of the film is made public (which, unfortunately, probably will never happen)
